Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimisha K.
Hi Kimisha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Kimisha Alexander, but my pen name is Kim K. I was born and raised in Atlanta, where numerous creative outlets were in arms reach. The literature section of art has always intrigued me. People didn’t understand why I could be so enthralled with printed words on paper instead of watching television, but it was something that was hard to explain. I knew I was different from others and would despise that about myself. When you’re a kid, you don’t know that your difference will be your superpower because it makes you stand out.
No matter where I went, I would always have a paperback book, a nook, or a reading app on my phone. In fact, when I was a teenager, my parents would gift me books and journals for Christmas. My bookshelf was filled with black writers who possessed different writing styles and composed so many diverse stories that I could relate to. However, when the story was over, I would write alternative endings on how I saw fit the story should go. When I didn’t have the energy to read, I would write pages of little stories here and there but thought nothing of it. I didn’t acknowledge that while I was going through life’s many changes, the only consistent thing was writing. I often used my journals as a way to convey my feelings when I felt like others were not listening. Writing words was always easier than speaking my truth. When I reached college, writing became second nature. With the help of a past professor/mentor and the opportunity to be the vice president of the writing club, I wrote my first screenplay. The school didn’t produce it because they felt like it was too graphic, but that didn’t deter my writing skills. If anything, it pushed me to work on my craft even more. It wasn’t until I told me about the app Wattpad that I held a glimpse of someone like me actually writing a complete story.
My mental capacity became open to so many writers who held enough passion for showing their works to other avid readers. When my then-boyfriend, now-husband, suggested I publish my works, I took a risk and revealed my stories on that platform. When I published my first chapter and received my first comment, nobody could tell me anything! In between classes, I asked my friends to edit my chapters and give feedback on the storyline. It built my tolerance for criticism and prepared me for how an audience reacts to certain plots and twists. Maneuvering adulthood got in the way of my writing, but I found my determination to publish my own book in 2019. My concepts usually center around romance, unexpected twists, and deep lessons behind every story. Pushing myself and investing in my dream was the best move I could have ever made. In the midst of networking and getting my self-published book out in the world, a fellow author was kind enough to suggest I apply for her publishing team. I saw nothing to lose and went for it. What I didn’t expect was to acquire a mentoring relationship with my phenomenal publisher, Tiece, and gain a larger platform to present upcoming books. Currently, I’m the author of five published books, three radio interviews under my belt (including one based in the United Kingdom), and gifted with my second magazine feature before I lived a full quarter of my life. The readers and supporters I’ve met paths with are greatly appreciated. All of my published books can be found on the Amazon platform under Kimisha Alexander or Kim K.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
From my view, the road has been relatively smooth, but I did hit a few bumps along the way. Adulthood is no joke, and if you do not find a balance in your life, you might feel a sense of anxiety or depression. I was so anxious about the future that I couldn’t even enjoy my present and that was my biggest problem. However, I didn’t get where I am by myself. Thankfully, I have a solid support circle that continues to keep me grounded. When I realized being an author was a possible reality, I spent my time taking writing classes in between working a full time job and school work. The determination to create a form of literal art outweighed any doubt that may have lingered throughout the process. Some may say I worked really hard for this, but I don’t feel that this journey was solely on my work ethic. I enjoyed every single moment of what I do and love when these deep-rooted ideas can be produced into books for hundreds to encounter and read. I genuinely believe that when something is meant for you, certain things happen for a reason. Obstacles are soon viewed as lessons and challenges are taken as vital experiences.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I compose stories that provide knowledge, entertainment, and lessons. Currently, my books center around romance, but in the future, I plan to venture out into other categories. I’m known for composing stories that can be labeled as ‘slow burn,’ and that means the characters gradually and naturally, fall in love or lust before beginning a romantic or sexual relationship. I want to take the readers on a journey that has them so committed to the plot. They must know what happens next. What sets me apart from others is my keenness on delving into unexpected topics that center around intimate moments . So many times, you find characters who hold the same problems and quick answers, but that is not always the case. My past books have addressed depression, sibling rivalry, autism, plus-size controversy, the importance of therapy, interracial love, and more. There are so many other topics that will be addressed in future works.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t really believe in luck. To me, if something good happens then, I would call it a blessing faster than luck.
