We recently had the chance to connect with Latrell Floyd and have shared our conversation below.
Latrell, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me right now is pretty busy for the most part. I work a regular 9-5 job (I work in HR for a community healthcare organization in Kentucky). On Tuesdays, I go to the next town over to do both of my radio shows (Talks with Trell and The Weekly Recap with Latrell). I also am the Director of Social Media for the Harbor Institute so I am constantly on social media trying to figure out what’s hot in the algorithm. I am also a collegiate advisor for my undergraduate chapter and lastly, I am a full time Doctoral student finishing up my doctoral certificate in October. If I have free time I am either resting or at the movies.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As far as an introduction, my name is Latrell Floyd and I currently reside in Kentucky. I am a social media content creator and my content is mainly in informative content in pop culture and nostalgic content. My content has expanded further from social media to radio. My brand name overall is called Talks with Trell which is a double entendre because my major in college was Communication Studies and my dream career is to become a Talkshow Host. When I am not creating content and writing my shows I am working on homework and studying because I am a full time doctoral student. I am getting my doctoral certificate in communication.
An interest of mine is going to the movies. The movies is a safe space for me and allows for me to escape my busy life for a while. I like to call this type of fun “brainless fun” because I don’t have to think or do anything. I do also do movie reviews on my social media and on my show so it ties in to being productive as well.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The earliest memory of feeling powerful would have to be when I was in the 5th grade and we had to write speeches about something that we adored and I wrote a speech about a dog that was my Grandma’s. My speech actually came in 1st place out of the whole 5th grade and that was when I knew I had a gift.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
A time when I almost gave up was when I first started taking content creating seriously. My content wasn’t being perceived the way I had hoped. After a while I lost confidence and imposter syndrome kicked in. I thought there was no need to keep putting in the work if nobody cared.
I voiced this to my friends and they told me to not give up and eventually my content will take off. Long story short, I am so thankful for them and I am glad I listened to them because content creating has changed my life and my perspective of social media for the better.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
No, the public version of me is completely opposite of the real me. The public version of me is very outspoken, flashy, and a huge extrovert. The real me doesn’t like attention and I am a true introvert at heart. I love being home with my blanket watching movies and eating snacks. I am very thankful for having that balance between “Latrell” and “Trell”.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will tell others how determined I was and how passionate I was about pursuing my dreams. Also, how I strived to inspire everyone around me and watching me that they can literally do whatever they set their minds to.
