We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mihai Pop. Check out our conversation below.
Mihai, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently got published in Docu Magazine.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, my name is Mihai Pop. I was born in a small city in Romania. My family immigrated to the US to escape communism. I fell in love with photography when I was 14 and my dad gave me my first camera. I’m currently looking for sponsors to help with my photography project showcasing my home country of Romania.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I would have to say my sister. She has always supported me when others told me I was unrealistic. My sister has been the one I still turn to when I’m feeling down or unsure of myself. Everyone needs that one person to lift you up and for me it’s my amazing sister.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
When I found out my wife cheated on me it completely broke me. I tried to move past it and keep our marriage together but it wasn’t meant to be. It took some time to overcome such heartbreak. Little by little I was able to move forward and leave the pain and her in the past. Yes we ended up getting divorced but it was for the best in the long run. I learned that even the one person that was my whole world can betray you. I learned to that it takes hard work to heal, it takes time and courage on a personal level. I also learned to look at myself and admit, deal with my own flaws.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
What you see is what you get. I don’t put on a mask for the public. In my opinion you can be the biggest movie star in the world or the one that picks up trash, both have the same value to me. I don’t put people on a pedestal and I don’t expect them to put me on one either.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I have a camera in my hands. When I’m walking around the city or in nature taking photos is my zen place. Knowing that no one else will take the same exact photo I take.
