We recently had the chance to connect with Tamika Jamison and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Tamika, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Travel! I’m exploring new countries, new cuisines, and connecting with new people.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a passionate storyteller, entrepreneur, film producer, curator, and literary advocate known for my work in promoting Black voices in literature. As the founder of AAMBC Inc. and Black Writers Weekend, I’ve created platforms that celebrate Black authors and creatives since 2008. From teen mom to CEO by 21, my journey began with a dream of becoming a best-selling author, and I’ve since written over 17 novels, 5 nonfiction projects, and released a documentary, earning accolades and establishing myself as a pioneer in the literary world.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Honestly, my relationship with myself. At the end of the day when everyone else has left, the only person still there is you. How I show up for myself – and have shown up for myself (or lost myself) during my different life seasons – continues to shape and define who I am.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve had some dark times in my life and some moments where I very nearly gave up on everything. It served as a wake up call, a realization of needing to shift priorities and center myself to get to a better place. I strive now just not to survive but to thrive. Life is what. you make of it, and I intend to make the most of it.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Living intentionally. Building the life you dream of doesn’t happen by chance. It takes action, intention, and a willingness to take the reins of your own journey. It’s not always the easiest, most comfortable, or quickest path, but it’s worth the thoughtfulness.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people will tell my story as one of joy, passion, and radical change. I started my business journey seeking to create spaces for people like me, underrepresented in the mainstream but with stories to tell and ideas to share. When I’m gone, I hope the community of creatives I’ve worked with over all these years will say “she did that.”
