Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Hill-Henderson.
Hi Charlie , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began at 17 with a love for fashion, creativity, and the belief that I could create something meaningful with my own hands. I’ve always been drawn to clothing and design, and over the years that passion grew into a career that has allowed me to combine fashion, education, entrepreneurship, and mentorship.
In 2010, I founded Chuck B. Moore Creations, my custom fashion brand, with the vision of creating unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that make people feel confident and beautiful. I later pursued my passion for fashion design and apparel at Bauder College while continuing to grow as a designer and business owner. My work has evolved to include custom prom gowns, bridal gowns, special-occasion dresses, and pieces created specifically for the person wearing them.
My path hasn’t always been easy. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve had to learn how to balance business, family, career, and the challenges that come with building something from the ground up. But every challenge has pushed me to become more resilient, creative, and intentional about the legacy I want to build.
Education has also become an important part of my story. With a background in psychology and years of experience working in education, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor and encourage young people through fashion and creative programs. I’ve seen firsthand how creativity can give a young person confidence and a sense of purpose.
Today, I’m continuing to build Chuck B. Moore Creations while expanding my vision beyond simply creating beautiful garments. I want to create opportunities for aspiring designers, teach young people the skills behind fashion, and show them that their creativity can become something bigger than they imagined.
When I look back, I’m proud that what started as a passion for fashion has grown into a business, a creative outlet, and a way for me to inspire others. I’m still growing, still learning, and still creating—and I believe the best part of my story is still being written.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Building a business from the ground up while balancing family, work, education, and all of the responsibilities that come with being an entrepreneur has challenged me in ways I never expected.
One of my biggest struggles has been learning how to keep going when things don’t happen as quickly as I imagined they would. Fashion is a competitive industry, and as a custom designer, there are many moving parts—from finding the right materials and managing deadlines to pricing your work appropriately and making sure your clients see the value in what you create. There have been times when I questioned whether I was doing enough or whether my vision would truly become what I imagined.
I’ve also had to overcome the challenge of wearing many hats. As a business owner, designer, educator, mother, and mentor, there have been seasons when I felt pulled in several directions at once. Learning to prioritize, set boundaries, and give myself permission to grow at my own pace has been an important part of my journey.
There have also been disappointments, setbacks, and moments when people or circumstances didn’t work out the way I hoped. But I’ve learned that every setback has taught me something—about business, about people, and most importantly, about myself.
The challenges have actually shaped me into a stronger entrepreneur. They taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of believing in my vision even when other people couldn’t see it yet. I’ve learned that success isn’t about having a perfect journey; it’s about continuing to move forward, learning from every experience, and refusing to let obstacles define you.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the difficult seasons because they helped build the woman and business owner I am today. I’m still overcoming challenges, but now I see them differently. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” I ask, “What is this teaching me, and how can I use it to become better?”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work is centered around custom fashion design, with a special focus on prom gowns, bridal gowns, and special-occasion pieces. Through Chuck B. Moore Creations, I create one-of-a-kind garments designed specifically for the individual wearing them. I love taking an idea, a sketch, a fabric, or even something a client can only describe in words and turning it into a finished piece that feels uniquely theirs.
I’m probably best known for my custom prom and formalwear designs. I’m passionate about creating gowns that are not only beautiful but also reflect the personality, confidence, and individuality of the person wearing them. I pay close attention to details such as silhouette, fit, embellishments, fabrics, and the overall story the garment tells.
What I’m most proud of, however, goes beyond the dresses themselves. I’m proud that I’ve been able to build a business from my creativity and continue doing what I love more than a decade after starting Chuck B. Moore Creations. I’m also proud of the young people I’ve been able to encourage through fashion, education, and mentorship. Seeing someone gain confidence because they created something with their own hands is incredibly rewarding to me.
I believe what sets me apart is the personal connection I have with my clients and my willingness to make the design process personal. I don’t want someone to simply wear a dress I made—I want them to feel like the dress was made specifically for them, because it was.
For me, fashion is about much more than clothing. It’s about confidence, self-expression, craftsmanship, and creating moments that people will remember for the rest of their lives. That is the kind of work I’m proud to put my name behind.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to finding a mentor or building a strong network, I believe one of the most important things is to surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you grow. Mentorship doesn’t always have to look like one person taking you under their wing. Sometimes it looks like a community of people learning, sharing, encouraging, and growing together.
One of the most valuable parts of my journey has been my sewing community—my “Sew Sisters” and “Sew Brothers.” We have built a community where we share knowledge, techniques, resources, ideas, and encouragement. We celebrate each other’s successes, help each other through challenges, and are willing to share what we’ve learned along the way.
That community has taught me that you don’t have to compete with everyone around you. There is room for all of us to grow. Someone may know something that I don’t, and I may have experience or knowledge that can help someone else. We learn from one another, and that exchange has been incredibly valuable to me.
My advice to anyone looking for a mentor is to be willing to build genuine relationships first. Network with people in your industry, attend events, join communities, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself. But also remember that networking isn’t just about what someone can do for you. Ask yourself what you can bring to the relationship as well.
I’ve learned that some of the best opportunities come from simply being connected to people who share your passion. Find your people, stay humble enough to learn, and be generous enough to teach. When you create a community where everyone wants to see everyone succeed, everyone grows.
