Check Out Demetrius Clements’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetrius Clements.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a professional artist with a passion for creating captivating works through exceptional attention to detail. Born and raised on the south side of Peoria, Illinois, I discovered my love for drawing at an early age. Art became my creative outlet, helping me overcome many of the challenges I faced growing up in the projects. It was there that I realized creating art wasn’t just a hobby—it was my calling.

For more than 30 years, I have balanced my career as a freelance barber while pursuing my passion for art. Along the way, I graduated from high school and earned a degree in Art from Western Illinois University. Those experiences shaped my strong work ethic, discipline, and commitment to excellence—qualities I bring to every piece I create.

My artwork can be found in private collections, custom commissions, local restaurants, and museums. As an independent artist, my success has been built on creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to transform my clients’ ideas into meaningful works of art. Whether creating a custom portrait, original painting, mural, or illustration, I strive to exceed expectations and deliver artwork that tells a story.

Today, I design and create artwork for clients throughout the United States, and my work is followed and appreciated by art enthusiasts around the world through social media. Every piece I create reflects my passion, perseverance, and dedication to producing art that inspires, connects, and leaves a lasting impression.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a completely smooth road.

Growing up on the south side of Peoria, Illinois, in the projects came with its own set of challenges. There were times when resources were limited and opportunities didn’t always feel within reach. Like many who come from similar environments, I had to learn early how to stay focused and push through distractions and hardships.

One of my biggest struggles was balancing survival and responsibility while still trying to pursue something as creative and uncertain as art. There were moments when I had to prioritize work and stability over my passion, which is why I spent so many years working as a freelance barber while continuing to develop my skills as an artist on the side.

Another challenge was simply believing in the possibility of turning my passion into a career. Coming from where I come from, success in the arts didn’t always feel like a realistic path. It took discipline, patience, and a strong work ethic to keep going, especially when progress felt slow or uncertain.

Even while earning my degree at Western Illinois University, I had to juggle responsibilities and stay committed to my craft without losing sight of my long-term vision. There were sacrifices along the way, but each challenge helped build the resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills that define my work today.

Looking back, those struggles didn’t stop me—they shaped me. They are a major reason I approach every project with pride, purpose, and a deep appreciation for the opportunity to do what I love.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional visual artist specializing in highly detailed, custom artwork that brings my clients’ ideas and visions to life. My work spans portraiture, illustration, and custom design pieces, and I am known for my extreme attention to detail, strong sense of realism, and ability to translate imagination into meaningful, visually striking artwork.

What sets me apart is my ability to truly listen and interpret what my clients envision—even when they struggle to put it into words—and turn that into a finished piece that exceeds expectations. My background as both an artist and a freelance barber has also strengthened my people skills, patience, and precision, all of which directly influence the quality and care I put into every project.

I am most proud of the journey itself—coming from the south side of Peoria, Illinois, and building a career in the arts through persistence, discipline, and self-belief. I earned my degree in Art from Western Illinois University while continuing to work and develop my craft, and I’ve been able to turn what started as a childhood passion into a full-time creative career.

Today, I create artwork for clients across the United States, with pieces displayed in private homes, local businesses, restaurants, and galleries. I am also followed by an international audience on social media, which allows me to share my work and connect with people around the world.

At the core of everything I do is pride, purpose, and a commitment to excellence—making art that not only looks powerful, but also tells a story and leaves a lasting impression.

What’s next?
Looking ahead, my vision extends far beyond creating exceptional artwork. My goal is to continue expanding my business by owning a commercial building that serves as a creative hub for entrepreneurs, artists, and small businesses. I aspire to provide opportunities for others to grow while building a lasting legacy rooted in creativity, community, and economic empowerment.
