Today we’d like to introduce you to Emeka Enwereuzor.
Hi Emeka, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story starts within me. Since a young age, my creativity and unique expression has always been something that’s guided me throughout life and the decisions I’ve made. From videography/ video editing, dance choreography, creative direction, fashion, community building/organization, event curation, emceeing, and for what a lot of people know me for, dancing; it has all been the ways I chose to express and honor myself. Throughout all those mediums of art there is an Igbo idiom that helped me understand if what I was doing was worthwhile… Onye kwe, Chi ya ekwe ( What I decide, my Chi is with me).
Following that internal guidance has lead me to some amazing experiences! Traveling across states for shows, dancing alongside world renowned artists, collaborations with so many major talents in my own city, and being a point of guidance for others as well. It has all been an honor. Which leads me to say, this path has come with responsibilities as well, which I’ve naturally chosen to take on. When you have a talent or gift, its meant to be shared. Teaching my culture or my style of dance, whether it be in a classroom or on the dance floor is a way to spread joy, smiles, and honor that gift. Having friends, family, or event associations trust you, with the responsibility of making an experience better has made this journey that much more enjoyable !
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has certainly been bumps in the road, whether it be people trying to stand in your way, disrespect, life, or even myself. From it all I’ve grown stronger and more certain of myself.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I am MOST known for is being a Afrobeats dancer, fast legs, good energy, and performing on stages. I specialize in legwork, a street style of dance from Nigeria that focuses on fast paced and intricate movements with your feet. I was living in Nigeria momentarily at the time it became popular over there and carried what I know back to the U.S. I’m most proud to see how far I’ve come with my relationship dance entirely, I went from being the only person dancing in clubs and social spaces to encouraging others to let loose, be themselves, and teach what I know to those that take an interest in it. I think what sets me apart from others is just my own creative expression, in that regard, we should all be set apart from one another, however, I feel that mine is authentic, pure joy, and childlike.
What are your plans for the future?
What I desire is not only to dance in videos, but rather, to go back to shooting dance or music videos. Many don’t know but that was one of my big passions before dancing.
