Check Out Evelyn Mims’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evelyn Mims.

Hi Evelyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am from Hazlehurst ,MS. which is very rural.I went to Jackson State University and one of my professor
Suggested that I intern in Atlanta at WXIA-TV.. That was in 1976 and my life changed forever.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have had many struggles . But the good has out weighted the bad.
Being an African American woman in the media world that doesn’t look like me you have to go above and beyond .

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
It is very hard for me to write about myself but will try.

Was the Blk camera woman at WXIA-TV
Worked on all productions
Became a Producer on local programming shows …Noonday, Peachtree Morning , Atlanta & Company etc.
I was also on air talent I was known as the Soap Opera Sultress gave recap of the Soaps.
Even had a One day walk on Days of our Lives
Joined the National Academy of Arts and Sciences / Southeast Chapter in 1980 worked my way up from volunteer to board member to President and National Trustee . Was the first African American female President in the Country of 19 chapters.. And created the most devise board in the country.
Because of work with the LGBQ community making sure their stories got told in the Atlanta market I was to be the Grand Marshall of the Atlanta Pride Parade in 2013.
I also produced the live Atlanta Pride Parade for the first time on WXIA-TV now it is 3rd largest Gay Parade in the country.
My last role at the station was Community Relations Specialist . In the role I made sure that the Atlanta community was always involved with our Anchors and reporters .
I retired in 2015 and started my company MIms Media Group.

What’s next?
To stay active and be of service in the community. I am on these very important boards in Atlanta .
