Today we’d like to introduce you to Warren Shepherd.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
(Taken from my blog.)
They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with a sharp crack to the head…
A little over three years ago, that’s exactly what happened, on a day that was to change the course of my future.
You see, I’ve been a creator all my life, writing since I was a child, chasing stories with every keystroke, living a thousand lives in the dark recesses of my imagination. And to be an effective storyteller, you’ve got to be a keen observer of humankind, a student of psychology, with a black belt in common sense. You’ve got to be able to empathize with your characters, embody them, relate to them. Little did I realize how well all these qualities would serve me on the journey to come.
Several years ago, a chance slip-and-fall accident at my rather mundane job of medical courier, resulted in the aforementioned sharp crack to the head, and a mild but temporarily debilitating concussion.
It was during my convalescence that I was afforded the time and freedom to teach myself something new. With my background in storytelling, it wasn’t much of a stretch to turn my curiosity and imagination to the world of photography, writing with light instead of words.
The internet was my university, YouTube in particular. With a multitude of virtual mentors at my fingertips, there was no subject that was out of reach. What began as a casual search for a basic understanding of the fundamentals of photography, turned into a full throttle quest to absorb anything I could on the subject.
The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. Camera fundamentals, lenses and lighting, editing, composition – I drank it all in as fast as it would flow. I dabbled in product photography and honed my technical skills in real estate photography, perfecting my composition and editing techniques along the way. But, it just wasn’t enough.
I yearned to flex my creativity.
Slowly, almost reluctantly, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to learn everything I could about Portrait Photography, a field which had previously intimidated me. With each building block I laid down, the more solid my foundation became, boosting my self-confidence and fortifying my resolve.
And then a magical thing happened: the more I learned about how light can shape a subject, create a mood, and tell the story of a living soul, the more enraptured with the art I became. It was as if all my life experiences had culminated in this one genre: my passion for constructing strange worlds from my imagination; to write credible, believable characters and dialogue; my lifetime of observing the human condition in an attempt to fathom why we do the myriad things we do; my obsession with movies, television, and acting, distilling them down to their core elements; my years of providing excellent client satisfaction on numerous levels — they had all brought me to this one point in my life where I could now artfully capture the essence of a person through my lens, to tell their story, explore their truth, all within a single frame.
It’s an exhilarating feeling.
The world I now inhabit is a thrilling sandbox to play in, and I am driven by an almost unquenchable thirst for expression, and limited only by my creativity. It’s ever-changing, offering new possibilities and challenges at every turn. I continue to learn every day, to sharpen my skills and perfect my craft, to broaden my understanding of my new expanded universe, all in an effort to explore it to its boundless frontier.
What a journey it’s been. And the best part – it’s only the beginning!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being good at something is very different than being successful at it. As proficient a photographer as one might be, if nobody is seeing your work (or appreciating it) your progress stagnates. So for me, getting noticed is a constant roadblock. I’m not talking about getting “Likes” or followers. I’m talking about making connections with your potential clients, appealing to the people who you want to work with. It’s like screaming into the void.
And since I’ve come at this world relatively late in life, I feel I don’t have as much runway as a younger person starting out. I therefore feel like I’m taking more chances, reaching out to people I may have no right to, swinging for fences way out of my range. But I don’t care. To quote Eminem: “You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime.” Whatever happens, I own it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Toronto-based portrait and headshot photographer creating emotionally honest portraits for professionals, creatives, and public figures who want to be seen as they truly are. I bring my full focus, energy, and attention to every session, whether you’re here for editorial portraits, actor headshots, personal branding, or corporate imagery. The approach is always the same: personal, intentional, and entirely about capturing something genuine.
Not comfortable in front of a camera? Good — that’s exactly where I do my best work. As a recovering introvert who’s spent years actively avoiding the spotlight myself, I know how to create the conditions where you feel relaxed enough to let the real you show up.
I offer a different kind of portrait session:
Many photographers meet you for the first time in the studio. I meet you long before the camera comes out.
Every session begins with a curated set of questions I’ve developed specifically to understand who you are — not just what you do. Your answers give me a window into your personality, your story, your aspirations, and what you want your images to say about you. This isn’t a booking form. It’s the beginning of a conversation.
Your questionnaire answers almost always open doors worth walking through. So before we shoot, we talk — a relaxed phone or video call where I can follow the threads your answers sparked, ask the questions that don’t fit on a form, and start to build the kind of rapport that only happens when two people actually listen to each other. By the time you arrive at the studio, we’re not strangers.
Drawing on what I’ve learned about you, I compile a set of images that inspire me — lighting references, moods, tones, and compositions that feel right for your session. I share these with you beforehand and invite you to build your own in response. This creative exchange means we arrive with a shared visual language and a clear launchpad — not a rigid plan, but a direction we’ve chosen together.
With the groundwork laid, the session itself is freed up to do what it should — create. We’re not spending your time on discovery; we already know each other. We’re spending it on the work. The mood, the light, the moment. I’ll direct you intuitively, building on what I already know about you, watching for the instants of genuine expression that can’t be manufactured and can’t be posed.
Every final image is hand-retouched by me personally — no outsourcing, no batch processing. I curate the selects with the same care I brought to the session, choosing images that reflect who you are rather than simply what you look like.
I’m not interested in trendy poses or assembly-line results. I’m interested in you — your presence, your personality, your power.
What does success mean to you?
That’s a tricky one. I think we all want to stand out against a sea of mediocrity. We all want to be noticed, to be seen, to be recognized, to be appreciated. Sure, money is part of it – one has to survive – but it’s far from all of it. I think, as with most people, we just want to leave a bit of ourselves behind in this world, a legacy perhaps, something unique that only we could achieve. If I can leave some work behind that people can one day look at and say, “Yeah, that’s a WARREN SHEPHERD,” then I think I’ve done my job.
