Today we’d like to introduce you to Barrett Dungy.
Hi Barrett, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an American film distributor and executive producer who has been one of the first pioneers for Black voices in the entertainment industry, long before the explosive growth of the Atlanta film market. I worked with Tyler Perry when he was first seeking a distribution partner for his stage plays, and I gave Kevin Hart the opportunity to do his first stand-up special, I’m a Grown Little Man.
After seeing Hollywood’s lack of response in distributing African American content, I created Urban Home Entertainment (UHE) and Faithwerks Films — together distributing 600+ films across the globe. I then launched The Ruckus Comedy label, home to Kevin Hart, Jamie Foxx, Academy Award-winner Mo’Nique, and Ron White — a five-time platinum comedian and Grammy nominee.
As Founder & CEO of One Culture Media Group, I was named a Top 30 Indie Power Player by Media Play News in 2025, with a 300+ title catalog distributed across 30+ AVOD/FAST/SVOD platforms worldwide including Tubi, Amazon, Peacock, Plex, and international partners SABC (South Africa) and SIC (Portugal).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started to get into the film business, Atlanta was not a film town. A friend of mine who was in the business in LA, and actually worked in distribution, told me I would need millions to get started. She asked me how much capital I had. I told her a little shy of $3,000. She said, “You can’t do anything with $3,000.” I said, “It’s all I have, and I’m going to start.”
There was an incredible amount of diverse talent that was never going to be discovered if I didn’t do something, so I just started down the path, even though I couldn’t see where the road was leading. And as long as I still had $3,000 in my bank account, I hadn’t lost money.
My three biggest challenges were:
•Getting someone to pick up the phone — Hollywood is very exclusive.
•Convincing someone to take a chance on me and my clients.
•Trying to keep my family together while chasing a dream.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One Culture Media is my independent distribution and production company, based just outside Atlanta.
What we specialize in is simple: getting underrepresented voices in front of an audience. I started Urban Home Entertainment (UHE) in 2004 because Hollywood wasn’t distributing African American content, and the talent was there whether anyone was looking or not. We were distributing Tyler Perry’s stage plays on DVD before the studios got involved. Between UHE and Faithwerks we’ve put more than 600 films into the marketplace, and the content standard has carried straight into One Culture — family, faith, comedy, and culture. If it’s something a family can sit down and watch together, it fits.
What sets us apart is that we’ve done this from the ground up, in Atlanta, before Atlanta was a film town. We’re not a studio waiting for a finished product to come across the desk. We’re often the first “yes” a filmmaker or comedian ever gets, and we know how to take that first project and build a global footprint around it. We understand the platforms because we’ve been on them since they existed, and we understand the audience because we are the audience.
Ruckus Comedy is my stand-up label, and it’s the brand I’m probably most proud of. Long before Ruckus, I gave Kevin Hart the opportunity to do his first stand-up special, I’m a Grown Little Man, and that same eye for comedic talent is what Ruckus was built on. The label has been home to Jamie Foxx, Ron White, Paul Mooney, Gotham Comedy Live, and Kings and Queens of Comedy. Ruckus is where we find comedians before the rest of the industry catches on, produce their specials, and get them distributed worldwide. We’re now building on that with Ruckus Radio, a 24/7 stand-up comedy streaming channel that puts our library and our comedians in one place for fans and sponsors.
What I want readers to know is this: if you have a film, a stage play, a comedy special, or a faith-based project and you’ve been told no everywhere else, we want to see it. We’ve built a real distribution pipeline for exactly that content, and being named a Top 30 Indie Power Player by Media Play News in 2025 tells me the industry has started to notice what we’ve known for twenty years — the audience for this work is global.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m a man of faith. That’s not a footnote to the story — it is the story. When I was starting out with less than $3,000 and people who knew the business were telling me it couldn’t be done, I didn’t have a plan that made sense on paper. What I had was the conviction that this was what I was supposed to be doing, and that if I kept walking, the road would show up under my feet. It did, one step at a time.
That’s why Faithwerks exists, and why family and faith sit right next to comedy and culture in everything we put out. I don’t see those as separate lanes. The same audience that wants to laugh on a Friday night wants something that feeds them on Sunday morning, and for a long time nobody was serving both. My faith is what told me that audience was there before the numbers proved it.
I still study, I still pray over the decisions, and I still believe the most important work I’ve done is giving somebody their first yes. That’s not a business strategy. That’s what I was put here to do.
