Today we’d like to introduce you to DiNera Michel.
DiNera, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Spring Valley, NY – born and raised. I grew up a little rough around the edges lol. I used to fight a lot and was just always angry. In a crazy turn of events, that slowed down some once I was 15 and my best friend, Michael Aristhene, was killed. I wasn’t living at home at the time and one of our last conversations he told me that I needed to be home so that’s what I did. I went home.
Because of my reputation around Spring Valley, most people didn’t know that I was very smart and good in school. I was in honors classes and was a straight a student. So once I went back home I decided to get on the straight and narrow. I didn’t completely stop what I was into but I did start putting together a plan for college. I knew I could go to college so that’s what I did. In August 2005, I moved to Atlanta to attend Clark Atlanta University. In my senior, less than a year after becoming a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, I found out my high school sweetheart and I were pregnant with our son. That put some plans on hold as I was gearing up to graduate from CAU and attend Georgia State University for my Masters.
Instead, I brought a beautiful, healthy boy into the world and became a stay at home mom. While this didn’t last long, I enjoyed the one on one time as a new mommy. Almost 6 months later, my boyfriend at the time, now Husband, was in a horrible car accident. He, by the Grace of God, survived but had a lot of major injuries including losing his left arm. After a few months of being home and taking care of him and our son, it became clear that it was time for me to go to work. It was time to put my Criminal Justice degree to work.
I worked for some wonderful Fortune 500 corporate jobs. Jobs that allowed me gain a lot of experience, meet new people and travel when needed. I ran the southeast and southwest investigation teams for over 10 years while working in fraud but a change was needed when I was responsible for training my new boss that was put in the role I was next in line for. I don’t know if I knew at that point I was done with Corporate but I prayed for almost a year and that was my final conclusion. It was a time to move on.
My husband suggested real estate. He told me that my work ethic, discipline and brain lol were aligned with what was needed to be successful in real estate. I knew nothing about real estate. My dad owned a home but it was not anything we ever talked about and I had an aunt that owned a few homes but I knew nothing. Absolutely nothing. So I started doing research. I read books on real estate, talked to a few real estate agents I knew and began my journey.
Today, nearly eight years into my real estate journey, I am a full-time Real Estate Broker, where I serve buyers, sellers, renters, investors, and families throughout Cobb County and the greater Metro Atlanta area.
Over the years, I’ve built my business around much more than opening doors and writing contracts. My background in investigations and corporate leadership has shaped the way I approach real estate. I’m very analytical, I pay attention to details, I understand risk, I know how to negotiate, and I believe strongly in educating my clients so they can make confident decisions. I have built a successful real estate business through relationships, referrals, consistent client service, strong market knowledge, high-visibility marketing, communication, and a genuine commitment to protecting the people I represent.
I am also the Managing Broker of The Commission Luxury Group, where my role allows me to pour into other real estate professionals while helping operate and grow the brokerage. I oversee brokerage compliance, review transactions, help agents navigate contracts and complex situations, lead training and mentorship, assist with recruiting and onboarding, develop systems and processes, track agent production, and serve as a resource for agents throughout their businesses.
When I look back at my journey from Spring Valley to where I am today, there is no way for me to tell the story without talking about God. My relationship with God has grown tremendously throughout every chapter of my life. He was present when I chose Clark Atlanta. He was present when I joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. He was present when I became a mother earlier than I planned. He was present when my husband survived an accident that completely changed our lives. He was present when we got married. And He was absolutely present when I walked away from the security of corporate America and stepped into entrepreneurship.
My faith today is very different from where it started. It has grown into a trust in God that is unwavering. I’ve learned that sometimes the path doesn’t look anything like the plan you originally created for yourself. Mine certainly didn’t. But every chapter — the good ones, the painful ones, the unexpected ones and even some of the decisions I probably wouldn’t recommend anyone repeat — helped build the woman, wife, mother, entrepreneur, Broker and leader that I am today. And I genuinely believe I still have more to accomplish..
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Michel Group is really built around one thing: making sure people feel informed, protected and confident when they make real estate decisions.
We provide full-service real estate representation throughout Metro Atlanta, with a strong focus in Cobb County and the surrounding areas. I work with buyers, sellers, investors and renters, but a large part of my business is helping people navigate major transitions — buying their first home, selling a home they’ve owned for years, relocating, moving up, downsizing or simply trying to figure out what their next move should be.
I think what sets me apart is the way I approach the business.
I’m not an agent who just wants to get a transaction closed. I want my clients to understand what we’re doing, why we’re doing it and how each decision impacts them. My previous career in investigations, fraud and corporate leadership definitely follows me into real estate. I naturally analyze everything. I look for risks, inconsistencies, negotiation opportunities and the little details that can easily be overlooked.
I’m also very big on communication. Real estate is already emotional enough without wondering what your Realtor is doing or what happens next. My clients know I’m going to educate them, communicate with them and advocate for them throughout the entire process.
On the listing side, I’ve become very intentional about how homes are presented and marketed. Putting a property in the MLS and waiting for something to happen isn’t a marketing strategy. I focus on positioning, pricing, presentation, digital visibility, strong photography and video, social media exposure and creating a story around the property that gives buyers a reason to pay attention.
With buyers, I probably spend just as much time educating as I do showing houses. I want them to understand contracts, negotiations, inspections, appraisals, financing, closing costs and what they’re actually agreeing to before they sign anything. Buying a house is too big of a decision for someone to feel like they’re just along for the ride.
One of the things I’m most proud of is that my business has grown largely through relationships, referrals and reputation. For me, that means more than simply saying I’ve sold a certain number of homes. When someone trusts me enough to send their mother, child, friend, coworker or family member to me, that means I did something right.
My role as Managing Broker of The Commission Luxury Group has also changed the way I serve my personal clients. In addition to running my own real estate business, I help oversee the brokerage and support our agents with contracts, compliance, transaction issues, training, mentorship, onboarding, systems, business development and sometimes the situations that make you stare at the phone for a few seconds before answering.
Because I’m working behind the scenes on so many different transactions and helping agents problem-solve, I’m constantly exposed to different contract situations, negotiation strategies, market challenges and real-world scenarios. That experience makes me a stronger Broker and a stronger advocate for my own clients.
I’m especially passionate about education. That applies to my clients, but it also applies to other real estate professionals. I enjoy teaching agents how to understand the business beyond just getting a license — contracts, risk management, negotiation, systems, professionalism and how to actually build something sustainable.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that The Michel Group represents who I really am. I never wanted to build a brand where I had to become a completely different person when I walked into a room. I can be professional, knowledgeable and serious about my business without losing my personality.
I laugh. I joke. I’m direct. I’m going to tell you when something doesn’t make sense. I’m also going to fight for my clients when I need to.
But underneath all of that is integrity.
My faith has a lot to do with the way I operate my business. I believe how you treat people matters. Your word matters. Your reputation matters. And I believe you can be successful without compromising who you are to get there.
As The Michel Group continues to grow, my vision is much bigger than just my personal production. I want to continue building a recognizable real estate brand in Cobb County and Metro Atlanta, grow a strong team of real estate professionals, expand our services and eventually create a true real estate hub where clients and agents can come for education, resources, representation and opportunities.
Ultimately, I want people to know that when they work with The Michel Group, they’re not just getting someone who can open a door or write an offer. They’re getting experience, strategy, market knowledge, strong negotiation, honest communication and someone who takes protecting their interests personally.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that everything doesn’t have to make sense while you’re going through it.
There were so many moments in my life where I thought things were going completely off course. Losing my best friend at 15. Becoming a mother earlier than I planned. My husband’s accident. Putting graduate school on hold. Leaving a successful corporate career. Starting over in an industry I knew nothing about. Taking a leap into real estate full time without a huge financial cushion behind me.
At the time, some of those moments felt like setbacks, detours or even complete disruptions to the plan I had for myself.
But looking back, I can see how every experience prepared me for the next one.
I’ve learned that God’s plan for my life has always been bigger than the one I created for myself. My job has been to trust Him, do the work and keep moving even when I couldn’t see the whole picture.
That doesn’t mean I’ve never been scared or questioned myself. I definitely have. But my faith has taught me that fear doesn’t automatically mean you’re making the wrong decision. Sometimes it just means you’re stepping into something unfamiliar.
So now, when life changes the plan, I don’t panic the way I once would have. I pray, I pay attention, I make a decision and I keep going.
