Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Grajales.
Hi Erika, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Colombia, where I studied advertising and photography. At 21, I moved to the United States to study English, first in San Francisco and later in Atlanta, where I settled in 2015. I worked in marketing and printing, fields that allowed me to remain connected to creativity and to my interest in making things by hand.
My interest in holistic wellness began through my own personal experiences. During a difficult chapter of my life, I turned to meditation, energy work, and practices that helped me understand the relationship between our emotions, our stories, and the body.
My entrepreneurial journey began before the pandemic with KRAFFE, a craft and coffee studio I created with my sister. Our vision was to bring mind, body, and soul together in one space. She prepared healthy food, while I developed ritual products and facilitated meditation circles. We created experiences that combined meditation, creativity, community, and food. KRAFFE was where I first brought the different parts of my vision together in a physical space.
When the pandemic began, we had to close the studio. Around the same time, I became pregnant and experienced a difficult pregnancy that required me to spend most of it on bed rest. Motherhood and later my experience with postpartum depression and rage, became a major turning point. Navigating that period far from my family helped me understand how easily women can become disconnected from themselves. It also clarified my desire to support women through their own processes.
After KRAFFE, my product line continued under the name Mystical Balance. At that stage, the focus was primarily on ritual products and intentional creations. As my own training and work expanded into family constellations, ceremonial cacao, somatic practices, art, and women’s circles, the business also needed to evolve.
That evolution became Balance Within. Today, Balance Within is the umbrella for both sides of my work: the space and individual sessions through which I support women, and Balance Apothecary & Rituals, which houses my product line.
More recently, a deeper relationship with the earth led me to study plant medicine and expand the shop to include botanical oils, balms, and ritual preparations. Each product is created with intention and in connection with the medicine of the plants.
Through Balance Within, I accompany women using somatic, ancestral, creative, and systemic practices. Whether through an individual session, a circle, a ceremony, or a ritual product, the purpose is the same: to help women reconnect with their bodies, understand the roots of what they are experiencing, and return to themselves.
As a Colombian immigrant, this work has also become a way of reconnecting with my roots and bringing that heritage into the life and community I have built in Atlanta.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. One of the greatest challenges has been building a life far from home. My entire family still lives in Colombia, and there were years when I was unable to see them. The immigration process can be long and emotionally exhausting, particularly when so many important moments are happening on the other side of the distance. I am grateful that my parents have been able to visit because they remain a fundamental part of my life.
There have also been significant personal transitions and losses that I had to navigate without my family physically nearby. Pregnancy and motherhood were especially challenging. I experienced a difficult pregnancy that kept me on bed rest, followed by postpartum depression and rage. Raising children without the support system I grew up with required me to confront my own limits and reconsider what it meant to care for myself while caring for others.
My husband has been an important part of this journey, walking beside me through many of these transitions and helping me build a home and family here.
My entrepreneurial path has also required constant adaptation. My sister and I had to close KRAFFE during the pandemic, just as I was entering a complicated pregnancy. What we had built as a physical community space could no longer continue in the same form. Later, Mystical Balance and eventually Balance Within emerged from that period of change.
One of the most difficult lessons has been learning to allow a vision to evolve without interpreting every ending as a failure. Each stage required me to release what was no longer possible while preserving the deeper purpose behind it.
I do not believe struggle needs to be romanticized, but these experiences have given substance to my work. They have shaped the way I listen, the way I accompany women, and the kind of space I want to create. One where difficult experiences do not have to be hidden or carried alone.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Balance Within ?
Balance Within is a holistic wellness practice created to support women in reconnecting with their bodies, understanding the roots of what they are experiencing, and developing a more grounded relationship with themselves.
I offer individual sessions, women’s circles, and private ceremonies that integrate somatic, ancestral, creative, and systemic practices. My work also includes womb reconnection, supporting women as they rebuild their relationship with their bodies, cycles, and inner wisdom. Depending on the person and what she is navigating, a session may include family constellations, ceremonial cacao, breathwork, movement, sound, art, meditation, plant medicine, or ritual. I do not believe that one method fits every person, so each experience is shaped around the woman in front of me and what she needs at that moment.
What sets Balance Within apart is the way these different practices are brought together. The work is not only about understanding an experience intellectually; it also creates space to recognize how that experience may be held in the body, reflected in family patterns, or connected to a significant life transition. My approach is intimate and personalized, with a strong emphasis on presence, safety, and integration.
Balance Within also includes Balance Apothecary & Rituals, my line of small-batch botanical and ceremonial products. The collection includes herbal oils, balms, ritual preparations, and ceremonial cacao created to help bring intentional practices into everyday life. Each product is made by hand and reflects my growing relationship with plant medicine and the earth.
I am most proud that Balance Within has developed into a space where my Colombian roots, creativity, personal experiences, and professional training can coexist. Whether someone comes to an individual session, attends a circle, or chooses a product from the apothecary, my intention is for her to feel invited back into relationship with herself.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories are the weekend trips I took with my parents from Bogotá to Palmira, where our extended family lived. We made that eight-hour drive almost every weekend, much of it along a narrow highway with only one lane in each direction. It sounds exhausting now, but as children, we experienced it as an adventure. We would sing, play games, and eventually fall asleep in the car.
Arriving in Palmira meant being welcomed by a house full of family. There were often around fifteen of us together, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Sharing food, stories, and laughter. I especially remember making manjar blanco, a traditional sweet from Valle del Cauca, and how food became part of the way we gathered and cared for one another.
More than any particular activity, what I remember is the feeling of belonging. Those weekends taught me the value of family, and creating meaningful experiences around simple traditions.
