Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomiya Stevenson.
Hi Tomiya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into interior design has been shaped by creativity, hands-on experience, and a genuine passion for transforming spaces. Before fully stepping into the design industry, I spent years working in visual merchandising and Atlanta’s hospitality and nightlife industry. Those experiences taught me how much a space can influence the way people feel, interact, and experience a brand.
I eventually decided to turn that passion into a career and launched my interior design business, Designed Details. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work on residential and commercial projects, including restaurants, lounges, mixed-use developments, and new construction. My work has allowed me to be involved in everything from concept development and space planning to FF&E, lighting, finishes, and project management.
Education has also been an important part of my journey. After earning my associate degree in Interior Design from Chattahoochee Technical College, I continued my education at SCAD Atlanta, where I’m currently pursuing my BFA in Interior Design. Combining formal education with real-world projects has helped me develop both the creative and technical sides of my work.
Today, I’m continuing to grow Designed Details while expanding into larger commercial, hospitality, and new-construction projects. My goal has always been bigger than simply making a space look beautiful, I want to create intentional environments that tell a story, strengthen a brand, and leave a lasting impression.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe the challenges have played a major role in shaping the designer and business owner I am today. One of my biggest struggles has been balancing school, running Designed Details, working, and managing the responsibilities of everyday life at the same time. There have been moments when I’ve had to make sacrifices, work long hours, and continue pushing forward even when things didn’t go according to plan.
Building a business has also taught me that being talented creatively is only one part of being successful. I’ve had to learn how to manage clients, budgets, contractors, timelines, unexpected construction issues, and the business side of design, sometimes through trial and error. I’ve also had to learn the importance of advocating for myself, setting boundaries, and recognizing the value of my work.
Another challenge has been creating opportunities for myself and getting into rooms where I may not have always had an immediate connection or introduction. Instead of allowing that to discourage me, I’ve focused on building my portfolio, continuing my education, networking, and letting the quality of my work speak for itself.
Every challenge has ultimately made me more intentional, resilient, and confident in the direction I’m taking. I’m still growing and learning, but I’m proud that I’ve continued to bet on myself and build something that represents my vision.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is Designed Details, an interior design company specializing in creating intentional, elevated spaces that are both visually impactful and functional.
At Designed Details, I work across residential, commercial, hospitality, and new-construction projects. My services can include everything from concept development and space planning to FF&E selections, lighting, finishes, signage, accessories, design direction, and project management. I especially enjoy hospitality and commercial design because it gives me the opportunity to create an entire experience, not just a beautiful room.
What sets Designed Details apart is exactly what the name represents: the details. I believe the smallest design decisions can completely change how a space looks, feels, and functions. I approach each project with the goal of creating something distinctive to the client rather than repeating the same aesthetic from project to project. Whether I’m designing a restaurant, lounge, residence, or new development, I want the finished space to have its own identity and tell a story.
I’m most proud of how much the brand has grown and the range of projects I’ve been trusted to take on. I’ve been able to expand beyond decorating and furnishings into larger-scale projects involving construction, custom design elements, lighting, material selections, vendor coordination, and overall project execution. Continuing my education in interior design has also allowed me to strengthen the technical side of my work while bringing real-world experience into the classroom and what I learn in the classroom back into my business.
Ultimately, I want people to know that Designed Details is about more than making spaces look good. It’s about creating thoughtful environments where every element has a purpose. As the brand continues to grow, my vision is to expand further into luxury residential, hospitality, commercial, and new-construction design while continuing to create spaces that people remember.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the interior design industry becoming much more technology-driven, personalized, and experience-focused. AI and other digital tools are already changing the way designers develop concepts, visualize spaces, communicate ideas, and manage projects. I don’t believe technology will replace designers, but I do believe designers who understand how to use it effectively will have an advantage.
I also think clients are going to expect more from their spaces. It will no longer be enough for a space to simply photograph well, it will need to function well, feel good, tell a story, and create an experience. This is especially important in hospitality and commercial design, where people are looking for memorable environments that give them a reason to visit and return.
Sustainability, wellness, flexibility, and longevity will also become increasingly important. I think we’ll see more adaptive reuse, multifunctional spaces, thoughtful material selections, smart technology, and designs that can evolve instead of constantly being replaced.
At the same time, I believe individuality will become even more valuable. With social media and AI making inspiration so accessible, it’s easy for spaces to begin looking alike. I think clients will increasingly seek designers who can give them something distinctive and personal rather than simply recreating a trend.
For Designed Details, that shift is exciting because my approach has always been centered around the details and the overall experience. As the industry evolves, I want to continue combining creativity, technology, and thoughtful design while expanding into larger hospitality, commercial, luxury residential, and new-construction projects.
