Conversations with Madi Lenz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madi Lenz.

Hi Madi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started to crochet in 2021. I watched YouTube videos to learn how. Many frustrating attempts to make a square, only to have a triangle. Once I was over the learning curve and could successfully make a square, I was hooked on the hobby. Pun intended. I made scarves and hats for myself, then I did a couple of small blankets and eventually a sweater. I like to bounce between long and short projects so that’s where I began making things like coasters, flowers, and bookmarks. My most recent feat is amigurumi, crochet plushies. I started accumulating things and set up a shop on shopify. I enjoy doing pop-up markets around Hapeville to share what I like to make. I also have a selection of small items at Impossible Moon Bookshop in Hapeville available too.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Its been as smooth as it can be for a small hobby store. My biggest obstacles is getting traction for online sales. Etsy didnt work out for me since there’s already too much there to stand out. I figured staying local and showing up in person would help me more. I would like to do more commission-based work for custom items.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m not sure if I specialize in anything, really. If you have an idea, I can create a pattern or find one online to make it myself. I’m the person you can go to create something unique. Need a sweater that fits your body the way you want it to? I can make it. Looking for small charms, plushies, or a new christmas ornament? I probably have the yarn already on my shelf. The end of the ball of yarn is my limit. So that’s why I purchase at least two. I’m most proud of my baby blankets. It’s always special to gift new parents a handmade blanket to match the baby’s nursery.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My husband makes happy. He is the most supportive human on the planet and puts up with all of my shenanigans. He is my best friend and we like to go out and enjoy Hapeville together.
