Conversations with Spence Browne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spence Browne.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been writing lyrics since I was nine years old, and the love only grew from there. I remember performing on the playground in elementary school. In high school I was in jazz band, and I would freestyle while my bandmates improvised on their instruments. In college I made my fair share of money competing in talent shows. In my adult years I performed with a number of different bands, and eventually formed my own, Spence Browne and The Dudes. One of those Dudes was TonyToneBeatz, and he and I have kept the vibes going ever since. He completely produced my album Identity, and he fully produced my upcoming EP, It All Makes Spence, dropping this October. Hip hop and creating music have been part of my fabric as far back as I can remember.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It would be easy to say it has been a hard road, but I have a supportive family who understands that music is my outlet. That support is the reason the road has been as smooth as it has. There is nothing more therapeutic than music. It helps me turn pain into triumph. Obstacles become art. Some of my best songs were created during trying times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
By day I am the Community Affairs Manager for an electric utility, working with communities across the Oklahoma City area. I am proud of my ability to connect with people from various cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds, and that is not something I leave at the office. It is the same thing I am doing when I write. On stage I am known for passionate live performances, and on record I am known for precise lyricism. My album Identity is more melodic, geared toward musicians. My upcoming EP It All Makes Spence is led by the drum. That one is for the drummers and the DJs. Both were fully produced by TonyToneBeatz, and that partnership goes all the way back to our band days.
