Daily Inspiration: Meet Angel Lavon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Lavon.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into special effects makeup started in 2012 when I went to Las Vegas for Halloween and created a zombie Nicki Minaj look. I loved the transformation process and became fascinated by how makeup could completely change someone into a character. That experience sparked an interest in SFX that I continued exploring over the years.

Interestingly, my college major was pre-med, and my original dream was to become a plastic surgeon. I’ve always been fascinated by the human body, anatomy, and transformation, so that naturally carries over into my special effects work. When I recreate wounds or injuries, realism is important to me—I want the effect to make sense anatomically, not just look dramatic.

Since then, I’ve continued developing my artistry, became a licensed esthetician, and eventually began bringing my skills to film sets. I’m now focused on continuing to grow within film and special effects while expanding my skills in areas like prosthetics, sculpting, and mold making.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. In 2020, I had made the decision to leave my corporate career, move to Atlanta, and pursue special effects makeup full time. During my move, my car was stolen with all of my makeup inside. Shortly after that, the world shut down because of COVID, and the career I had planned to pursue was suddenly put on hold.

Losing everything I had built while also navigating the pandemic took a toll on my mental health. I ultimately returned to the corporate world while I rebuilt my life and my makeup kit. Now, several years later, I’m finding my way back to the industry and giving myself another opportunity to pursue the path I originally set out to follow.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a special effects makeup artist focused on character transformation and realistic injury effects. Realism is extremely important to me, especially when creating wounds. I pay attention to the details of how an injury would actually look and affect the body because I want the finished effect to feel believable.

What I love most about SFX is the ability to completely transform someone and bring an idea or character to life. Whether I’m creating an injury, aging, or a more elaborate character, I enjoy figuring out the details that make the transformation convincing.

I’m most proud of continuing to develop my craft and challenging myself with each project. What sets me apart is my attention to detail and my desire to understand what I’m creating rather than simply recreate something I’ve seen. My goal is for someone to look at my work and have to question whether it’s real.

What’s next?
My plan is to continue building my career in special effects makeup, expand my skills in prosthetics, sculpting, and mold making, and gain more experience working in film and television.

One of my biggest long-term goals is to own a warehouse that I can turn into a creative studio. I envision a space where special effects, beauty, photography, and other forms of artistry can all exist under one roof. I want it to be a place where artists have the freedom, space, and resources to create without limits.

Ultimately, I want to build more than just a career for myself. I want to create a space where creativity can truly flourish.
