Today we’d like to introduce you to Katya Vilchyk.
Hi Katya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story is really a story of reinvention.
I was born and raised in Ukraine and moved to the United States when I was 20. Coming from a post-Soviet upbringing, I learned very early to be resourceful, independent, and willing to figure things out on my own. I didn’t come to America with a roadmap for entrepreneurship — I simply knew I wanted to create a life that felt like mine.
My business officially began in 2016, when I started my photography company. I was completely self-taught. My background in marketing and graphic design gave me an understanding of branding and visual communication, but photography became the medium through which I could bring all of those pieces together.
For several years, I photographed families, but eventually I realized I was much more interested in the person behind the business — their story, their personality, their vision, and how they wanted to be perceived. In 2020, I made the decision to pivot into personal branding and commercial photography. That shift completely transformed my business.
Today, I work as a personal brand and product photographer, creative director, and marketing strategist, helping entrepreneurs and brands create visual identities that actually feel like them. I work especially closely with women, wellness brands, and luxury businesses, creating everything from personal branding imagery and campaigns to product photography, video, and content.
In 2023, I opened my own 1,300-square-foot natural-light studio in Crabapple Market. What started as a photography studio has grown into so much more. It has become a creative home for my clients, other photographers, entrepreneurs, and the community I’ve built around my business.
One of the things I’m most proud of is that my work has evolved beyond taking beautiful photographs. I’ve built a business around helping people see themselves differently — to become more confident in their presence, their brand, and the business they’re building.
I’ve also become increasingly passionate about community. Through events, creative gatherings, educational experiences, and my studio, I’ve created spaces where entrepreneurs can connect, collaborate, learn, and feel supported.
Looking back, there was never really one big moment that got me here. It was a series of pivots, risks, lessons, and decisions to trust myself even when I didn’t have everything figured out. And honestly, I think that’s the most important part of my story. I didn’t follow a traditional path to entrepreneurship. I created it as I went — and I’m still creating it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. Entrepreneurship has come with plenty of uncertainty, mistakes, difficult clients, slow seasons, and moments where I questioned whether I was doing the right thing.
One of my biggest challenges was knowing when to pivot. I built a successful family photography business, but eventually I knew it no longer aligned with where I was headed. In 2020, I took the risk of starting over and moving into personal branding and commercial photography.
That transition taught me to trust myself, get comfortable with change, and stop being afraid of outgrowing what once worked. The road hasn’t always been easy, but every pivot has brought me closer to the business and life I actually want.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a personal branding and product photographer, creative director, marketing strategist, and energetic artist. I specialize in creating elevated, intentional imagery for entrepreneurs and brands, helping them tell their story visually and show up with confidence.
But for me, photography has always been about more than what you see. I’m deeply intuitive and very attuned to energy, so I focus on capturing not just how someone looks, but how they feel. I want my clients to see themselves in a way they may not have seen before.
I’m most proud of the creative community I’ve built around my studio in Crabapple Market. What started as a photography studio has grown into a space where entrepreneurs and creatives come together to create, connect, and grow.
What sets me apart is the combination of visual storytelling, branding, marketing, creative direction, and energy. I’m not just creating pretty images — I’m helping people embody the next version of themselves and translate that energy into their brand.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are the simple ones — summers in Ukraine, spending long days outside with friends and family, being creative, and having that feeling that the days would never end.
I think growing up that way gave me a deep appreciation for connection, creativity, and creating experiences that feel meaningful. Those things still show up in my work and in the community I’ve built today.
