Today we’d like to introduce you to Wira Liandy
Hi Wira, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I pursued a career in the arts because that’s what I love the most, I can express what’s in my head, because the art I make is based on psychological things around me.
An artistic career can also give me flexible working hours without having to stick to a monotonous system, plus the artistic environment where I work gives me a lot of energy to continue creating.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey was certainly not smooth, there were many obstacles such as the materials I used to paint running out, stress due to some thoughts that I tried to overcome by creating artwork, many competing artists that made it difficult to get a gallery, and the difficulty of fighting to become an established artist.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a young artist from Indonesia, you can call me Wira Liandy (2000) studied and
graduated from Institut Seni Indonesia
Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta in
2022. now living and making art in
Yogyakarta. From childhood I like to draw and observe various forms of animals, this is what inspires his artwork, my artwork is about Defense Mechanisms which can be defined as “unconscious resources used by the ego” to reduce internal stress. People often design these unconscious mechanisms to reduce conflicts within themselves, especially between the superego. This is often encountered in everyday life, so his work tells a story about defense mechanisms represented in the visual form of pangolin scales developed according to his imagination, the visual selection is based on the similarity of the nature of pangolins that protect themselves.
The similarity of the pangolin’s self-protective nature with its hard scales when it feels threatened.
Its scales are hard when it feels threatened, as well as a defense mechanism that regulates mindset to avoid stress.
regulating mindset to avoid excessive stress. Starting from 2018 until now (2024), i has participated in dozens of art exhibitions in various cities such as Yogyakarta, Jakarta, and others, he also has awards including: Best Coloring (2008), FLS2N craft (2017), and “Best Artwork” aksiartsy4 (2021).
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The support and love from my family is the most fundamental thing for where I am now, they always support whatever I want to do.
The art environment where I work and my fellow artists are also important for what I have achieved today.
