Exploring Life & Business with Alexis Orivri of Riv Buys Properties

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Orivri.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I built Riv Buys Properties out of my family’s worst years.

Real estate has been in our blood for three generations. My grandfather was a real estate developer in Lagos, Nigeria. He built things that could have changed everything for our family, and he passed away before he ever saw the fruits of his labor. My mother and aunties carried the torch in Nigeria as agents and developers. My father moved to the United States when I was three and has spent almost 30 years helping families relocate and rebuild their lives. We grew up in this business. We have also lost everything because of it. Twice.

In 2010, my father’s house was foreclosed. We watched our home go and there was nothing we could do.

Then in 2021 everything collapsed again. My father was in a devastating car accident. He spent years on crutches and could not work. We lost our home and became homeless. I was the firstborn, so I stepped up. I supported my family here in the U.S. and family back home in Nigeria at the same time. I took on a mountain of debt trying to keep us all afloat. We had nothing left and no one to turn to.

When I was a kid I was obsessed with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I loved how they showed up for families in their darkest hours. They did not just fix houses. They gave people their dignity back. I did not realize it then, but that show planted something in me. I wanted to be the person who shows up when everything feels impossible.

When my father’s settlement finally came through, we made a decision as a family. Instead of just trying to survive, we would use it to become cash buyers, change our trajectory, and help other people trapped in the same nightmare we had just lived through.

That decision is why Riv Buys Properties exists. I have flipped six houses since then across five states. I have made mistakes, lost money, and been burned by dishonest contractors. I have also chosen, every single time, not to lowball homeowners. I refuse to profit from someone else’s pain. Today we are a family-owned, Better Business Bureau accredited business buying houses, land, multi-family, and commercial property in nine states, and every seller we work with gets treated the way my family wished someone had treated us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth is not the word I would use. I have been homeless. I have watched my father lose his home twice, once to foreclosure in 2010 and once after his accident in 2021. I have carried family on two continents while drowning in debt.

Then the business itself tested me all over again. I taught myself flipping with no mentor and no formal training, so every lesson came with a price tag. I walked into an industry full of fraudulent contractors. Jobs not delivered. Costs that ballooned. Money lost to people who never intended to do the work. Out of my six flips, I broke even or took losses on most of them. Part of that is the learning curve. Part of it is that I refuse to lowball the people I buy from, and I would rather make less than profit from someone’s pain.

There is a voice in my head that whispers I will never make it in this business. Every time I hear it, it fuels me. I am working on my General Contractor license so I never lose another dollar to a contractor who does not share my values. Real estate is not for the weak, and I have stood tall through all the lows with my head held high.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Riv Buys Properties is a family-owned cash home buying company based in the Atlanta metro. We buy houses, land, multi-family, and commercial property directly from owners in nine states: Georgia, California, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Colorado, and Washington. We buy as-is. No repairs, no cleanouts, no agent commissions, no fees. We cover closing costs and we can close in as little as seven days when a seller needs speed. Every state we serve has its own page on rivbuysproperties.com so a family anywhere can see exactly how we work where they live.

Most of the people who call us are carrying something heavy. A foreclosure notice. An inherited house stuck in probate. A divorce. A rental that has become a burden. A parent moving into senior living. What sets us apart is that we have lived that side of the table. My family has been through foreclosure and homelessness, so nobody on my team will ever pressure a seller or talk down to them. We make honest cash offers and we explain exactly how we got to our number.

We are also senior living transition specialists. That means we help with the whole transition, not just the sale. Deciding whether a parent can safely stay in their own home or should move into care. Understanding the real senior housing options and how families actually pay for senior care. Downsizing a lifetime of belongings. Timing the sale of the house around a move-in date so nobody is rushed. Supporting the adult children coordinating all of it, including from out of state. We built a free senior transition library on our website with step-by-step guides and a vetted resource directory covering everything from grief support to estate sales to professional organizers, because most families are walking this road for the first time and nobody hands them a map. And because my father has spent almost 30 years in the moving business, we can even coordinate the physical move when a family needs it. The house is one piece of a much bigger moment, and we treat it with the patience and dignity that season of life deserves.

What I am most proud of is what happens after closing. Most cash buyers hand you a check and disappear. We do not. Every seller who closes with us qualifies for a complimentary wealth planning session with Qunnie Lin, our exclusive Forbes-recognized financial advisor partner at LIN Wealth Management, so families leave with a real plan and not just a check. We are Better Business Bureau accredited and we hold ourselves to those standards on every single deal.

And if our cash offer is not the right fit for someone, I am still here. I will help them explore every option and connect them with resources, even if that path does not involve selling to us. That is the promise I built this company on.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The person matters more than the deal. That is the most important lesson I have learned. Every time I have protected my integrity at the cost of short-term profit, it has come back to me in trust, referrals, and peace of mind. I have broken even on flips because I would not lowball a seller, and I do not regret a single one of those decisions. Money comes and goes. Your name is what you actually build.

And I would add this: do not let the voice of doubt make your decisions. Mine whispers that I will not make it in this business. I use it as fuel. Study hard, verify everyone you work with, learn the skills yourself so nobody can hold your project hostage, and keep showing up. Resilience is the whole game.
