Today we’d like to introduce you to Grainne McClain.
Hi Grainne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our story begins in 1990, when the property opened as the Hotel Nikko Atlanta, home to one of Buckhead’s most unexpected treasures: a serene Japanese zen garden with a three-story waterfall that we have preserved and cherished through every chapter since. The property became the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in the late 1990s and remains a Buckhead landmark today, on Peachtree Road in the heart of the neighborhood. The newest chapter is the one we are proudest of. In spring 2025 we completed a full renovation of the property, reimagining our guest rooms, gathering spaces, and dining, including The Fabled, our restaurant and bar built around the idea that every great stay starts with a story well told. Through every change, the constant has been our team, many of whom have been with the hotel for decades and who bring genuine care to every guest, every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our biggest undertaking in recent years was a full, top-to-bottom renovation of the property, transforming every space while never closing our doors; we welcomed guests every night as the hotel changed around us. Through it all, our focus was keeping service seamless, maintaining the same warm arrivals and the same care in every room. What carried us through was our people and our neighborhood, and that experience became the foundation for the most exciting era this property has ever had.
We’ve been impressed with Grand Hyatt Atlanta, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a luxury hotel in the heart of Buckhead, known for pairing world-class hospitality with unexpected moments of calm: a Japanese Zen Garden hidden in the middle of the city, cocktails by the firepit, and dining at The Fabled, our restaurant and bar, where storytelling is woven into every course. What sets us apart is our people. From housekeeping to the front desk to the kitchen, this team takes real pride in its craft, and we celebrate that culture as intentionally as we care for our guests. And what makes us proudest is the scene you will find here on any given evening: travelers from around the world unwinding beside Atlantans who stopped in for happy hour, each with a story of their own to share.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Hospitality is moving from selling rooms to curating experiences. Over the next five to ten years, we believe the hotels that thrive will be the ones that feel like destinations in their own right, with dining, wellness, and social spaces that locals love as much as guests do. We also see travel becoming more blended, as remote work lets people fold business trips into leisure stays, and hotels will need spaces that flex with them. Discovery has changed for travelers as well: the next generation of guests finds their hotel on social media before visiting a booking site, which is why storytelling is now as essential to a hotel as service. And we expect personalization and wellness to keep rising, with guests wanting stays tailored to them and experiences that leave them better than they arrived.
