Hidden Gems: Meet India C. Harris of Black Doves of Excellence Inc

Today we’d like to introduce you to India C. Harris.

Hi India C., can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been one of resilience, purpose, and transformation. I became a mother at a young age, and while that came with significant challenges, it also ignited a determination to build a better future for myself and my family. I earned my MBA from the University of Phoenix, established a successful career in the restoration and insurance industry, and discovered that my greatest calling extended beyond my profession—it was to inspire healing, hope, and personal growth in others.

Over the years, I have channeled my personal experiences into service. As an author, I have written books that address topics such as family relationships, emotional healing, mental health, and personal empowerment. I also founded Black Doves of Excellence Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women and youth through mentorship, education, leadership development, and community engagement. Whether I am hosting events, speaking to audiences, or writing, my mission is to create safe spaces where people can heal, grow, and recognize their God-given potential.

Today, I consider myself a servant leader, author, speaker, and advocate for transformation. Every challenge I’ve faced has become part of my testimony, and every success has strengthened my commitment to helping others rise above adversity. My vision is to continue expanding the impact of Black Doves of Excellence Inc., publish meaningful books that inspire lasting change, and build a legacy that reminds people that their past does not define their future—it can become the foundation for their purpose.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped the woman I am today. Becoming a teenage mother required me to mature quickly while balancing the responsibilities of raising a family, pursuing my education, and building a career. Along the way, I also experienced the heartbreak of losing my mother at a young age, navigating family struggles, and overcoming periods of self-doubt. There were seasons when I questioned whether my dreams were attainable, but I refused to allow my circumstances to define my future. Instead, I chose to view each obstacle as an opportunity to grow stronger, wiser, and more determined.

In addition to personal challenges, building my nonprofit organization and establishing myself as an author has required perseverance, patience, and unwavering faith. Like many entrepreneurs, I have faced financial hurdles, moments of uncertainty, and the challenge of building visibility in a competitive space. There were times when progress seemed slow, but I remained committed to my purpose. Those experiences taught me that success is not measured by how quickly you arrive, but by your willingness to keep moving forward despite adversity. Today, I see every setback as preparation for the impact I am called to make, and I hope my journey encourages others to believe that resilience, faith, and consistency can turn even life’s greatest challenges into purpose.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
One of the things I love most about Atlanta is that it truly lives up to its reputation as the “Black Mecca.” It is a city filled with opportunity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, where people from all walks of life come to pursue their dreams. There is an incredible culture of Black excellence here—you see Black-owned businesses thriving, families building generational wealth through homeownership and land ownership, and professionals, creatives, and community leaders working together to make a lasting impact. Atlanta is a place where visionaries can connect, collaborate, and build a legacy, and I believe it offers endless possibilities for those who are willing to put in the work.

As the founder of Black Doves of Excellence Inc., I’ve witnessed firsthand how supportive and resourceful this community can be. There are countless organizations, networking opportunities, and individuals who genuinely want to see others succeed. That spirit of collaboration and empowerment is one of the reasons I chose to build my nonprofit and continue growing my platform here. Atlanta has given me the space to serve, write, lead, and create meaningful change within the community.

There really isn’t much that I dislike about the city. Like any growing metropolitan area, Atlanta faces challenges such as traffic, rapid growth, and ensuring that all communities have equal access to opportunities and resources. However, I choose to focus on the positives. I see a city that continues to evolve, embraces diversity, and encourages people to dream bigger than their circumstances. To me, Atlanta is a city of resilience, possibility, and legacy—a place where hard work, faith, and perseverance can truly turn dreams into reality.
