Part 1: The Spark—My Journey to Natural Hair and Product Creation

My journey into the beauty industry is deeply rooted in how I was raised & how my struggles & lack of care & support became motivation. Growing up, things weren’t easy. I was raised by a single mother with no father around, and money was always an issue. We didn’t have the resources for regular salon visits. The lack of support sparked something inside me at an early age. I started doing my own hair out of necessity, but it quickly turned into a deep passion.

Even as a child & in my pre-teen years I knew what it felt like to want to feel beautiful but not have the means to experience it. I promised myself that I would find a way to make myself & others love their hair and confident without taking their last dime.

That childhood mission shaped my path as a entrepreneur and loctician. When I began working with natural hair and locs, it wasn’t just a job; it was about helping people embrace their natural crowns with confidence.

However, as my business grew, I hit a roadblock. I noticed the commercial hair products on the market were often packed with harsh chemicals that caused heavy buildup & lacked high quality ingredients or even real ingredients for that matter. Example: a hair dressing being marketed as 100% pine tar but does not include pine tar in ingredients & only has a pine tar scent created from an artificial source.

In 2017, I decided that I wanted to change that, especially since they had took my favorite hair product off the market and replaced it with something that did not even have the active ingredient anymore

. I teamed up with my best friend who shared my vision for quality hair products with real ingredients. Together, we set out to create a line of hair products that combined premium, clean, deeply nourishing ingredients tailored for natural textures, offered at an affordable price point. We started out developing a foundational growth oil to stimulate the scalp. From there, we immediately began working on our signature hair dressing. What started as a shared kitchen passion project in 2017 became the foundation of our business, bridging my hands-on styling background with our joint mission to democratize healthy hair care.

A few years passed & Because we were building this brand from the ground up without corporate backing, our path was filled with steep operational hurdles. We decided to call it quits as a duo and part ways to focus on our individual lives. I later decided to keep things going and eventually started over realizing my biggest initial challenge was product formulation. I refused to compromise on ingredient quality, . Finding that perfect balance took an immense amount of trial and error. The Growth Elix’r came together first, but the hair dressing formula was a grueling labor of love—it took about two to three years of intense, consistent refining just to perfect it so that it delivered maximum growth results

Funding the initial batches and navigating the logistics while balancing my full-time client schedule at the salon was & still is exhausting. But the turning point that made every single obstacle worth it happened at my friend’s barber shop.

She had a new client who had a large thin & short area the middle of his head where he could not grow hair for about six years. Nothing worked, and nothing was growing. She decided to bless him with a jar of the loc+ tress hair dressing I had sent to her barber shop so that she could sell – also receive feedback on the hair products.

To our amazement, he had finally grown a full afro in the middle of his head where it had been stagnant & thinning for six years. He was so incredibly excited that he even left a glowing review on Google. That was the exact moment I realized we had hit a massive milestone. It wasn’t just a kitchen hobby anymore; we had created something powerful that genuinely changed people’s lives. That breakthrough proved that those years of hard work had paid off, and it gave me the ultimate validation to keep pushing forward.

The HOLISTIKC ESSENTIALS Brand is scheduled to launch at beauty icon today on my birthday (July 31st,) My clients Love that They can trust my products and expertise when it comes to natural hair care.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle is time management, I am learning to navigate and prioritize daily as well as learning to ask for help when things get overwhelming

As you know, we’re big fans of HolistiKc Essentials . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a natural hair stylist specializing specifically in (dread)loc maintenance. I am highly sought after for lock repairs and installs, I’m often praised for having growing hands. What sets me apart from others in this profession is that I genuinely care about the health of your locs & actually to educate clients whenever they have questions.

I am most proud of the amount of integrity I continue to enforce & display while building the HolistiKc Essentials brand .

What were you like growing up?
I was Very quiet, I’d read 24/7 and the only time you heard my voice is probably if I was singing to destiny’s child album.
