Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Schrils.
Hi Vanessa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Being from Curaçao has definitely shaped the way I see beauty. Growing up surrounded by so much vibrant colors, culture, and individuality taught me to appreciate beauty in different forms. I think it’s also given me a strong sense of identity, which has carried over into my artistry. I’m not afraid to be different, take up space, or create my own lane. I bring that same mindset into my work and into the way I make each client feel. I’ve had a passion for makeup ever since I was in middle school. I grew up watching YouTubers like Jaclyn Hill and Carli Bybel, and they really inspired me to develop my own artistry. I’ve always been the friend doing everyone’s makeup for prom, college events, and special occasions. About three years ago, I decided to turn that passion into a side hustle, and I completely fell in love with it. It never really feels like work because I’m genuinely so passionate about what I do and the way my makeup makes people feel.
A month ago, I took a huge leap of faith and left my corporate job to pursue makeup full-time. It was a scary decision, but I knew I had to give myself the opportunity to see where this passion could take me. And honestly, it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were times when it felt overwhelming trying to grow in multiple areas at once, but ultimately, I believed in myself and was lucky enough to have so many people around me who believed in me too. Most importantly, I kept God first and trusted that He was guiding me in the right direction. That faith and support system helped me push through the challenges and keep going, even when things felt uncertain.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Makeupby_vanessa?
I’m known for creating looks that make my clients feel confident, beautiful, and like the best version of themselves. What sets me apart is how passionate I am about my artistry and how much I genuinely care about the experience I create for each client. My favorite part of what I do is seeing the confidence shift when they look in the mirror and walk out of my chair feeling themselves.
I’m most proud of the confidence I’ve built in myself and my ability to create my own lane. I’m not afraid of what’s in front of me or who’s beside me because I know I’m on my own path. I’ve worked hard to build something for myself, and I’m proud that I’ve never felt the need to compete with anyone else—I’m focused on becoming the best version of myself and seeing how far I can take it.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think we’re going to see a lot more color and creativity in makeup. I feel like people are becoming more comfortable experimenting with different colors, textures, and statement looks instead of always sticking to neutrals. I think makeup is going to become more about having fun with it and expressing your personality.
