We recently had the chance to connect with Kristen Barker and have shared our conversation below.
Kristen, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think what’s most misunderstood about being a makeup artist is that people assume it’s just showing up and putting makeup on someone. In reality, there’s so much more behind the scenes. There’s the planning, organizing, sanitizing, and constantly restocking my kit – not just buying the newest trending products. There’s the discipline of protecting myself from burnout while also sacrificing weekends and time with my family during busy wedding season.
But at the same time, this job is deeply rewarding. I get to create real friendships, be a calming presence, and sometimes even step into the role of a therapist. Most importantly, I get to help someone feel truly beautiful and supported on one of the most important days of their life. It’s not just makeup – it’s showing up for people in a way that leaves a lasting impact.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Kristen, the face and heart behind Barker Beauty. Makeup has always been more than just a service to me – it’s my passion and a way to truly connect with people in my community. I love creating an experience where every client feels comfortable, understood, and beautiful – like we’ve known each other forever, more like a best friend or sister not just a client and artist.
I’m married to my biggest supporter, and my business name, Barker Beauty, comes from our shared last name. My husband is just as much a part of this dream as I am – he is always behind the scenes cheering me on, helping me pack the car on early mornings, and even cleaning makeup brushes. We built this brand together, and I think that heart and teamwork shines through in everything I do.
Outside of being a makeup artist, I am a huge dog lover, a lifelong learner of everything, and someone who is always striving to be the best version of myself. Recently, I have been pouring a lot of energy into health and fitness, spending time at the gym and focusing on balance in all areas of life.
What I believe truly sets Barker Beauty apart is the experience. Whether you’re sitting in my studio chair or I’m traveling to you, I want every session to feel personal, uplifting, and unforgettable – because makeup isn’t just about looking beautiful, it’s about feeling seen, celebrated, and confident in who you are.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that has most shaped how I see myself is the one I share with my husband. He makes me feel seen, heard, beautiful, powerful, and endlessly loved. He never misses a chance to tell me he’s proud of me, and that constant support has truly changed the way I see myself. No matter how big or how crazy my ideas and adventures may be, he’s always right there cheering me on and helping me chase any dream I have. Because of him, I not only believe in myself more – I also feel braver, stronger, and more loved than I ever imagined.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering showed me resilience – the kind you only discover when you’ve been broken down and have no choice but to rebuild. It taught me compassion, not just for others but for myself, because pain makes you realize how deeply everyone is fighting battles you can’t always see. It taught me gratitude for the small, ordinary moments of peace and joy that success alone can’t give. Most of all, suffering taught me that my worth isn’t defined by achievements – it’s defined by how I rise, how I love, and how I keep moving forward even when it’s hard.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect at all costs is authentic connections. No matter how busy life or business gets, I believe in showing up as my true self and creating spaces where people feel safe, seen, and valued. Whether it’s with my clients, my community, or my loved ones, I hold onto the idea that genuine relationships and human connections matter more than appearances, trends, or status. That’s the heartbeat of who I am and the foundation of everything I do.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My heart and passion would remain. The way I love people, the way I show up for them, and the way I make them feel. At the core, I am someone who craves connection, who loves deeply, and who is always striving to grow into the best version of myself. My passion, my resilience, and my faith overpowers any title or tangible thing. – that’s what I hope people remember about me. Because at the end of it all, it’s not what I have or what I do that defines me, it’s how I treat people, the love I show, my energy, and the light I leave behind in others.
