We recently had the chance to connect with Mia Kapree and have shared our conversation below.
Mia , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My mornings are a mix of family, faith, and fitness. I start by getting my two-year-old ready for school — which definitely keeps me on my toes. After that, I take a moment to pray and set my intentions for the day. Once he’s off to school, I head to the gym to clear my mind and energize my body. That balance of caring for my son, connecting spiritually, and taking care of my health helps me start the day grounded and focused.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mia, but most people know me as DJ Mia Kapree. I’m an Atlanta-based open-format DJ, host of the podcast Put Me On, and a lover of all things music, fashion, and culture. I’ve built my brand on creating unforgettable experiences blending hip-hop, R&B, soul, Afro-beats, and more to get every crowd moving. What makes my journey unique is that I don’t just play music I curate vibes. As I like to say, “Where music, fashion, and culture meet that’s where you’ll find me.” Right now, I’m focused on growing my podcast, expanding my reach as a DJ, and continuing to merge music, fashion, and culture into everything I do.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
Honestly, my partner Sim has taught me more about work than anyone else. He’s a business owner, and watching how he operates has been eye-opening. He showed me that there’s no such thing as magic you make the magic happen yourself. It’s about vision, consistency, and putting in the work every single day, even when no one’s watching
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely. There was a point when I was working full-time, DJing, and being a mom all at once—and it felt overwhelming. I was running on fumes, questioning whether I could keep up with everything I loved and still be present for my family. But that moment taught me how to prioritize, ask for help when I need it, and push through without losing myself in the process
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I really admire Issa Rae not because of her power or success, but because of her character. She’s authentic, she uplifts others, and she stays true to herself while creating opportunities for people who look like her and share her vision. That kind of integrity and generosity inspires me more than any title or influence ever could
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m absolutely doing what I was born to do. Music has been in me from day one I even attended a performing arts school—so it’s always been more than a hobby, it’s who I am. Music and fashion are my calling, and that’s why I show up to every set fully dressed and in my element. DJing isn’t just about playing songs for me it’s about creating an experience, and I get to live that purpose every time I perform
