Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sam Hoppenbrouwer of Metro Atlanta

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sam Hoppenbrouwer. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Sam, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My morning starts by getting our daughter out of her crib and then having some quiet time together watching cartoons while we drink our milk and coffee. Once we get ready for the day, we kiss Mama bye and then I bike her over to daycare drop off before riding to the shop. Then I check in with our team, respond to some emails, and get ready to head out on our service route.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sam Hoppenbrouwer and I am the owner/operator of Project Chimney, a full-service fireplace and chimney company based in Atlanta, GA. After almost a decade in the fireplace industry, I took a chance on myself and opened my own business. For the past 3 years, Project Chimney has offered a full range of fireplace services from cleanings, repairs, gas long installations, waterproofing, inspections, chimney caps and more! We work on homes old and new, but have a passion for getting old Atlanta fireplaces back into working order after decades of neglect. We service a wide range of neighborhoods and surrounding cities as Atlanta’s reliable chimney company.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believe that I could accomplish anything by myself. As I’ve grown as a person and a business owner, I’ve quickly learned that there is nothing more valuable than building relationships and having supportive partners in your corner. Whether that’s industry partners, customers, coworkers, and family and friends, you are only as good as the team around you.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Chimney work is very physically demanding, and running a company on top of it takes a mental toll as well. Through the challenges of tall roofs and small business ownership, you learn the value of hard work and that nothing good comes easily.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Over the past several decades there has been a greater emphasis on higher education and less prestige associated with trade work. It has been proven time and time again that society will always depend on the trades regardless of where technology takes us. We are proud to be in this line of work and welcome those who believe in the value of working with their hands.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Our customer feedback is consistent with one word: informative. During an appointment, our technicians take the time to fully explain each fireplace system and how it works, any deficiencies found, and what solutions are available. We take pride in the amount of time that we spend informing customers of their fireplace system and all that it is capable of. Project Chimney puts high value on customer education along with high quality work at a fair price.
