Life & Work with Mario McDowell of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario McDowell.

Hi Mario, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
So hairstyling kinda came natural, i would do my sister and friends hair but never thought about making a living doing it. Until I finally got tired of corporate work and was encouraged by my spouse to take a shot at working in a salon so filled with nerves I gave it a shot. From the new relationships were formed, new opportunities came, and I found myself working in all sorts of areas. I started doing photoshoots, tv shows, and even traveling the country teaching as well. Started with a leap of faith and the rest is history.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were some bumps on the way of understanding this lane of being self employed. When you’re fresh on the scene making quick and substantial amount of money mismanagement of it bound to happen. So learning a buisness strategy, proper planing, and responsible investing became important.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Professionally for 20+ years ive worked as a master cosmetologist & im also a licensed instructor as well. I started out specializing in extension of all sorts. I know over 20 extension processes and applications from sew-ins, fusions, micro links, lace applications and so on. The thing im most proud of is that my talents opened the door for me to work in film and tv. I’ve worked with some many people that ive long admired and to be in the room and requested by this people feels amazing. My versatility and creativity sets me apart, I believe it’s important to have your own point of view that helps to set you apart.

What does success mean to you?
Waking up and doing what I love all while getting paid for it. It is definitely a amazing feeling.
