Life & Work with Mekhi McCoy of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekhi McCoy.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been a creative person. Growing up in Atlanta, I was drawn to movement, fashion, performance, and storytelling. My mom has always been my biggest mentor. She encouraged me to dream beyond the traditional path, take chances on myself, and trust that what is meant for me will not miss me.

I’m also one of those people who never wanted to choose just one creative lane, so eventually I stopped trying. I call myself an entertainer because it is the simplest way to explain that I act, dance, model, choreograph, and enjoy bringing ideas to life.

The journey has not been perfectly linear. I’m balancing full-time responsibilities with auditions, rehearsals, and self-tapes. Some days feel exciting, and other days are simply about showing up after work and staying prepared. That process has taught me patience, discipline, and how important it is to enjoy the journey instead of only chasing the next accomplishment. Every experience has taught me something different, and I still feel like a student in many ways.

I definitely do not have everything figured out, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come, excited about where I’m going, and grateful that I get to keep creating.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I definitely wouldn’t call it a smooth road, but it has been a meaningful one. One of my biggest challenges has been balancing full-time responsibilities with auditions, rehearsals, and self-tapes. Entertainment opportunities can arrive with little notice, while regular life does not exactly clear your calendar for them.

There is also a lot of uncertainty. You can prepare, train, and give your best performance and still not book the job. I’ve learned not to treat every “no” as a reflection of my talent or my future. The journey has taught me patience, discipline, adaptability, and how to keep believing in myself while I am still becoming.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At my core, I’m a storyteller who uses a few different tools. I work as an entertainer across acting, dance, modeling, choreography, and creative direction. I’m especially drawn to grounded, honest performances and movement that has a purpose beyond simply looking good.

People I work with often describe me as prepared, adaptable, and open to exploring new ideas. What sets me apart is the way my different disciplines influence one another. Dance gives me a strong awareness of my body and presence on camera, acting helps me understand the emotion behind movement, and creative direction allows me to see the full story rather than only my individual role.

I’m most proud of becoming someone I can depend on both as a performer and a creative leader. I’m still learning and discovering what I do best, but I think my curiosity, versatility, and genuine love for collaboration are what make my work feel like me.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are honestly really simple. Just sitting in front of the TV watching shows like “That’s So Raven.” I loved how funny, expressive and imaginative the show was. Raven could turn any normal situation into a full performance and I was completely entertained. Looking back, those moments probably helped spark my interest in acting and storytelling. I didn’t know I was studying performance back then. I just knew I wanted to be part of the magic happening on screen.
