Life & Work with Oluremi Hart of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oluremi Hart.

Oluremi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Early in my childhood I always had an attraction to cameras. These instruments could take a moment in time, and capture it, or even freeze it by generating an image, or images. And in doing so, we can always refer back to those specific moments in our lives, it’s a easy recall. Visual storytelling and being a artist was simply a way of life in growing up.

Born and raised in Miami Florida, I left for the United States Navy right after school, where I made sure I kept a camera in my possession. I was on and off with being involved with the art throughout my tour in the Navy, but I really got back in touch with it in 2017. I had just came from off of a deployment and one of my peers, (Now very close friend) Rodd is his name by the way and he was senior to me, although we were the same paygrade. Initially we did not get along, like at all. I couldn’t stand this guy. But one day we were in the shop and I saw him doing some work on his laptop, He was editing a video in which he had shot, and also used a drone to assemble.

I thought it was beyond cool to see what he had put together! I discovered we had a lot interest in common, and from that point we started to really build a chemistry. I ended up getting a drone in 2017, due to him kind of influencing me to get one. From there I edited videos, I found myself needing and looking for a camera, and doing small videos for friends. I eventually gained a interest in doing Music Videos. One of my first ever like legit music video that I ever shot was in Virginia Beach, Va. It was the Summer of 2018. And The artist I worked with and am still very good friends with till this day, name is Donny Spade. We collab’d on a project titled “24”. Leading up to how we shot that Music Video was a short movie in itself!

We collab’d on a few more projects after that one and I started working with more artists in Virginia. I continued with the Music Video route maybe for about 3 years before I started to find myself losing interest in wanting to Music Videos. I truly was losing the drive to want to shoot music videos and work with Artists. I came across Artists who worked really hard at their art and some who really didn’t take it serious. I wanted to make the transition over to doing movies and documentaries. I mean I’ll do Music Videos, but at this point I really have to be in tune with the music that the Artist has created to continue to push to collaboration along.

I came across a writer in 2022 where I got my shot at shooting my first ever Short Film, which I got a budget of $2000.00 to shoot it, I directed it, I shot it, and I was the editor. This project was titled “The Weekend”. It came out extremely well for my first ever short film, and truly I enjoyed it. I learned so much from that experience. Learning how to lay out a schedule, prepare for a shoot, casting talent, going through auditions, table reads, and rehearsals, scouting locations and venues, and securing them. Presenting everything to the executive producer/writer, assembling the shot list, shooting schedule and planning everything out just like that, dealing with all types of unexpected scenarios, and curve balls. Learning that you truly have to Direct when you’re on set. Reading everyone’s energy, seeing that everyone is comfortable and the atmosphere is one where we can allow ourselves to be vulnerable, but know the setting we’re in is a secure one. Assuring that mentally everyone is in the right head space and we know our parts and have established what we’re going to do and how we’re going to do it. I can go on and on about this project, I truly can’t take away that experience, it really taught me what to be on the lookout for, what to avoid, what to do more of and less of.

I continued to collaborate with a variety of Musical Artist along the way, some good, some not so good. As I continued to want to dive more into the filmmaking, storytelling side of being a visual creative. I took it upon myself to shoot my own documentaries, and even decided to shoot a horror short with my Daughter, because she likes horror movies so much!

I decided to get into school, to really see if there’s anything else I could learn, I also wanted to really submerge myself into the art and in a sense go to the drawing boards. At this point, I’ve expanded and have grown a bit, I have equipment to where I can take on really good jobs and collaboration, I’ve built a pretty solid portfolio, I want to see if I can really push this a step further, so I decided to go to school. I decided to go to the San Francisco Film School where I went and completed my Associates in The Science of Digital Filmmaking. I ended up Collaborating on a total of 14 projects 9 – Shorts, 2 Documentaries, A commercial, A Music Video, and a mini BTS series for the commercial. It was pretty dope!

After acquiring my Associates from the San Francisco Film School in 2025 I continued to remain a student of the arts while still taking on projects in collaborations in the field. I decided to go to the Academy of Arts University, where I’m currently working on my Bachelors in Motion Picture and Television, with a emphasis in Directing. I’ve worked on a variety of collaboration at this school, as I continued to work on eventually complete my own project titled “Closed Chapters”, which is a whole other topic in itself. I’ve had several projects that I’ve been apart of make it into Film Festivals which is a great experience as well. I continued to work on a variety of projects and collab’s here as well, I directed a thriller short, that Won at the NXTUP Film Festival that AAU hosts, that’s just a start!

Just to list out the current line up! And currently getting ready to publish 3 more projects this Fall. “Inheritance”, which I edited, and “Lost Time” Which I was the Assistant Director, DP, and Editor for.

As I mentioned I’m gearing up for the Fall Semester, and these releases this Fall so that’s where I’m at currently! These projects and Collabs got me to where I’m at now! Maintaining my operation as a Studio! Not to leave out but the biggest take away so far as I’ve done this is the people I’ve come across and I’ve been able to maintain contact with to do this. My network has expanded and that has truly been the most beneficial part of this process. The growth of my network has been the most valued to me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So it definitely has NOT been a smooth ride. Far from a smooth road, trust me when I tell you that! From crashing my drone for a music video, my camera falling and my lens breaking while it was on a tripod for another video, These are surface level set backs.

My first semester at The San Francisco Film School taught me some real valuable lessons. We had to collaborate with our peers on projects and assemble crews to put our films together. Some of the struggles along the way was being able to put together a film that could properly convey the story to the audience. I had a project that I was preparing to shoot, and I couldn’t secure film permits, the weather wasn’t looking promising at all, and the day of the shoot, one of the actors didn’t show up. So much was going on that day, there was so many changes, and pivots leading up to us getting the cameras hot, and in summary it showed in the film. I missed a good number of shots, along with the location, personnel change, it was a disaster, and my instructor who was Jan Johnson definitely exposed it. It was a teaching moment for me, having previous experience, the product I presented to her just wasn’t it.

I had another scenario where I secured a location for the first Short film that I shot, and it was for a bar scene. I got a hold of the owner, secured the place, gave this guy the date and time I needed the place and what I was doing, just for me to show up the morning of the shoot, with the executive producer/writer, talent and crew, and the place was boarded up and looked like it was abandoned and condemned. Looking inside, the place was in no condition for us to shoot a mood/vibe type scene. It looked like a construction zone. At the moment, I had to quickly figure out, how to pivot and address this scenario, because here we are, I have an entire film crew with me and this place isn’t ready for us to shoot these scenes. We did find an alternate location to use that day, but it didn’t suffice at all!

I ended up finding another bar in Virginia Beach for us to use, free of use, and the talent was on board with showing up and getting the scenes re-shot! So it all worked out in this scenario!

Another struggle was getting the budget together for my project, to get it successfully shot. Closed Chapters was a project I started on while I was at the San Francisco Film School. Initially the budget wasn’t available for me to shoot it.
I’ve come across a variety of issues while on this journey! Even since I’ve been attending AAU (Academy of Art University), I’ve had my fair share of setbacks and unpleasant surprises when it came to obstacles and challenges.

But what I learned is as a creative we just have to figure out what we need to do to achieve the necessary result. At this point I expect to face some sort of obstacles or challenge. I’ve truly never ever had a perfect shoot. Something always happens that raises the stakes, from losing content, audio, re-shoots, a list of items, I just learned to be resilient, and just figure it out, come up with a plan to where we can sale what we’re doing to the audience. If I have a perfect shoot, I will accept it, but at the same time it’s going to be on my conscious that at any second something could pop up, or we discover something that presents to us a scenario to where a decision has to be made to keep everything moving forward.

My networks, and relationships with the people that I’ve worked alongside with and built these relationships with.

Why is it important?

Because I can’t do this by myself!

Movie making is extremely hard, and taxing in so many ways. Financially, emotionally, mentally, physically, creatively! And I value those who are able to help me bring these visuals to life. Their energy, their time, their efforts! Because it is incredibly hard to put movies together. And doing it by yourself? Is a task that is honestly more destructive than constructive, I mean if it’s something simple sure, but as I’ve been growing and continuing to develop, I’m finding myself more stretched thin with time and capacity as the projects become bigger, I’m going to need people in places to make sure that everything is in place for us to put the art together, sign our names on it, and show it to the world.
