Meet Calista Phair of Calista Phair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calista Phair.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After giving birth to my son, I was only home with him for 3 weeks after he was discharged from the NICU, before I had to return to work. As a new corporate employer I had no FMLA, or PTO accrued. With an infant that was born full term, that had medical needs, surgery at 3 months old I found that my 50-60 hour week corporate role wasn’t accommodating to me needing work-life balance. I started looking for work Jan of 2020 and made it to the last round of final interview for 8 roles getting denied from every position. I decided I couldn’t wait for someone to hire me so created it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I made my first six figures my first year of business and truly felt like wow. God thank you for giving me this opportunity. This rise was pre COVID where many businesses were seeking out businesses that were minority owned and when the shift happened, so did clients , need and access. Our family decided to relocate and build a home which meant getting a full time role as I needed to show proof of income for two years before purchasing and that shifted how my business functioned and operated.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see the talent acquisition industry becoming increasingly AI-driven over the next five to ten years. Companies are already using chatbots for phone screenings, text-based interviews, and automated candidate matching. While these tools will make hiring faster and more efficient, the human element will become even more valuable. I can’t tell you the shock I hear calling candidates over the phone, a recruiter really called me lol. The future will belong to professionals who can balance technology with empathy, relationship-building, and sound judgment, because AI can streamline the process, but people still create meaningful connections.
