Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Lozano.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in photography when I was a kid. My mother wanted to be a photojournalist, but didn’t to start a family. She got me my first camera when I was 6 years old. It was a Kodak Hawkeye Pocket Instamatic 110 Film Camera. She taught me how to hold it, look through the viewfinder, and set up the shot. I continued photography in college. I carried a camera everywhere I went and took pictures every day. I’ve been shooting since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a struggle. When I started photography, I was in the art space. I moved to New York City, and I needed to find a way to earn money. I had my cameras from college and decided to try making money as a photographer. It took time to find a way to make money as a photographer in NYC. I had a regular job working as a waiter for a catering company. I shot headshots, portraits, and events. I landed in real estate photography, but I shoot for myself, creating projects and artwork based on photography.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a background in filmmaking and writing. I like to base my work on poems and literature. If there’s a line from a poem or story that gives me a vivid image or feeling, I try to create a photo that represents that.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Shoot every day and be free. Don’t worry about the rules. You can learn the rules as you go and learn to break them your own way.
