Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Jones.
Hi Janelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story with 4kiddos really starts with being a homeschooling and worldschooling mom myself. As I was building out enrichment experiences for my own kids, I kept running into the same frustration over and over: there was no single place to find quality classes, camps, and events for homeschool and worldschool families. Everything was scattered across Facebook groups, word-of-mouth, and a dozen different websites — and providers who wanted to reach this specific community had just as hard a time finding us as we had finding them.
I’d already spent years in EdTech marketing and running my own consultancy, Infusion Enterprises, which I started back in 2011. That background gave me the marketing and business chops, but it was my own lived experience as a parent that turned “someone should build this” into “I’m going to build this.”
So in 2019, I founded 4kiddos as a two-sided marketplace connecting homeschool and worldschool families with the people running enrichment events, classes, camps, and experiences for kids. I actually funded the early development of 4kiddos through Infusion Enterprises — consulting by day, building the marketplace on the side, until it could stand on its own.
Since then, we’ve grown 4kiddos into a live platform serving families in Atlanta and Louisville, with Detroit next on the list for expansion. Along the way, I’ve also become a published and Amazon bestselling author, contributed to Chicken Soup for the Soul, and written for outlets like Business Insider and Parents.com — sharing not just the entrepreneurial journey but the homeschool/worldschool lifestyle that started all of this in the first place.
At the core, it’s a story about scratching my own itch as a parent and turning it into something that now helps other families do the same.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, no — it’s been anything but smooth, and I think that’s true for most founders building something genuinely new.
The biggest challenge has been the classic two-sided marketplace problem: you need families on the platform to attract hosts, but you need hosts and experiences on the platform to attract families. Early on, that meant a lot of manual, unglamorous work — personally recruiting hosts, building relationships one at a time, and asking families to trust a platform that didn’t have much on it yet.
Bootstrapping added another layer of difficulty. I funded 4kiddos’ early development through my consultancy, Infusion Enterprises, which meant I was essentially running two businesses at once — consulting to keep the lights on while building the marketplace nights and weekends. There were plenty of stretches where I wasn’t sure the runway would hold out long enough for 4kiddos to become self-sustaining.
There’s also the challenge of serving a niche that’s often misunderstood. Homeschool and worldschool families don’t fit neatly into how most edtech or event platforms are built, so a lot of the early product decisions meant unlearning assumptions from the traditional education space and rebuilding around how our community actually lives and learns.
And now, as we expand beyond Atlanta and Louisville into markets like Detroit, a new version of that same challenge shows up: what worked to build trust and density in one city doesn’t automatically transfer to the next. Every new market means starting some of that relationship-building over again.
If there’s a thread through all of it, it’s that the struggles haven’t been one big dramatic moment — they’ve been the steady grind of building trust, one family and one host at a time, while the business model itself demands patience most people don’t expect.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about 4kiddos?
4kiddos is a two-sided marketplace connecting homeschool and worldschool families with the enrichment events, classes, camps, and experiences their kids are looking for. We’re currently live in Atlanta and Louisville, with Detroit as our next expansion market.
What sets us apart is that we’re built specifically for a community that traditional edtech and event platforms overlook. Homeschool and worldschool families have unique needs and rhythms, and 4kiddos was designed from the ground up around how they actually search for and book enrichment, rather than retrofitting a generic events platform to fit them.
I’m most proud that 4kiddos comes from lived experience — I’m a homeschooling and worldschooling mom myself, so this isn’t a business I built from the outside looking in. Every feature and host relationship is shaped by the same questions I ask as a parent.
I want readers to know that 4kiddos isn’t just a directory — it’s a curated marketplace where families can trust that what they find has been vetted, and where hosts get access to a community that’s actively looking for exactly what they offer.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d say resilience paired with resourcefulness. Building a two-sided marketplace from scratch, while bootstrapping through my consultancy, means you’re constantly solving problems with limited resources and no guaranteed playbook to follow. There’s no shortage of moments where something doesn’t work, a partnership falls through, or growth is slower than you’d like — and the ability to keep adjusting and moving forward, rather than getting stuck, has been essential.
I’d also point to authenticity. Because 4kiddos comes directly from my own experience as a homeschooling and worldschooling parent, I’ve never had to fake understanding of the community I’m serving. That authenticity shows up in how I talk to families and hosts, and I think people can tell the difference between a founder who’s building for a market versus one who’s building for their own community.
