Meet Kris Bird of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Bird.

Hi Kris, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It is my mission in life to get women excited about the SciFi genre. I grew up watching Star Trek, Star Wars, Back to the Future. But back then, when you walked down the SciFi section of a bookstore, it was like that’s where toxic masculinity went to die. I have spent the last 15 years building a SciFi platform that women and girls felt safe in, coining the term “Sci-mance,” and giving the genre new life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This industry has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. First I sought out traditional publishing, but no one wanted what I was selling, then came the uptick in social media, the birth and death of Indie publishing through the rise of A.I. I once told myself, I would give each book 100 rejections before self-publishing. It used to be the kiss of death to self-publish. But I’ve somehow made a name for myself and now I just tell myself that no matter how the industry changes, I’m not going to get angry about it, I am just going to find a way to evolve with it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
By my 3rd book I hit the Top 100 Bestseller list. By my 4th I hit top 10. Next book, that #1 spot is mine. People are shocked that a no-name Indie author was able to pull this off but I was never handed a manual or set of rules. So if you’re making it up as you go, why not think outside the box? I’ve commissioned weapons designers, fan art, and now live-action trailers. No one told me to do this but I’m just going to keep going until someone tells me I can’t. (and even then I might do it just to spite them)

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Atlanta is full of the most creative people on earth who all have that hustle work ethic. More importantly, we all support each other. Whenever I need inspiration, I just have to go exploring the neighborhoods and I always find it. Murals, fashion, food; there’s no shortage of creative flow. I’ve lived in D.C., NYC and I can honestly say I love Atlanta with my whole heart, there’s no room for any other city.
