Meet Nathaniel Speciale of Speciale Design and Build

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathaniel Speciale.

Hi Nathaniel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story really starts when I was about 12 years old in upstate New York. My dad taught me the trade at a young age — not just how to use tools, but how to take pride in your work, show up consistently, and stand behind what you build. Those early years shaped my work ethic and laid the foundation for everything I do today.

In the 90s, I moved to Atlanta and continued building my career in construction. Over time, I earned my General Contractor’s license and began developing a vision for running projects differently — with more professionalism, stronger communication, and a higher standard of accountability. I had seen too many homeowners frustrated by poor quality work and lack of transparency, and I knew there was a better way to serve people.

That vision eventually became our company.

What started as S&D Remodeling has evolved into Speciale Design & Build — a full-service residential design and construction firm. Today, we specialize in additions, kitchens, basements, and outdoor living spaces, combining thoughtful design with high-quality craftsmanship.

One of the greatest blessings in this journey is that I get to work alongside my wife, Amanda, who leads our design work. She brings creativity, vision, and attention to detail that truly elevates our projects. Together, we’re able to offer a seamless design-build experience — from concept to completion — ensuring our clients feel confident and cared for every step of the way.

Over the years, we’ve built strong trade partnerships, refined our systems, and focused heavily on growth — not just financially, but operationally and professionally. For me, success isn’t only about building beautiful spaces. It’s about building something lasting — a business rooted in integrity, quality, and family.

At the end of the day, I’m still that kid who learned from his dad — I just get to do it on a bigger scale now, with my wife by my side, serving families throughout Georgia.

And we’re just getting started.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road.

Like many in construction, we felt the impact of the 2008 market crash. The downturn in real estate affected everyone in the industry, and it forced us to adapt quickly, tighten operations, and rethink how we approached growth. Then years later, the pandemic brought its own challenges — supply chain disruptions, material price volatility, labor shortages, and constant uncertainty. On top of that, the natural ups and downs of the real estate market always influence remodeling demand.

Beyond economic shifts, scaling a construction business comes with its own set of challenges. Finding and retaining quality trade partners who align with our standards is an ongoing focus. Staying current with evolving building codes, new materials, design trends, and home technology requires constant education. At the same time, we’ve had to invest in supportive technology and systems on the office side — project management software, estimating processes, and architectural design coordination — to operate at a higher level.

There have been growing pains. There have been seasons of pressure. But every challenge has made us stronger.

We’ve learned to build smarter, communicate better, and operate more intentionally. The struggles forced us to refine our systems, strengthen our partnerships, and double down on quality and professionalism.

In the end, those difficult seasons didn’t slow us down — they shaped us into the company we are today.

We’ve been impressed with Speciale Design and Build, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Speciale Design & Build is a full-service residential design-build firm based in Georgia. We specialize in additions, kitchens, basements, and outdoor living spaces — projects that require thoughtful planning, structural expertise, and cohesive design.

What makes us different is that we’re not just a remodeling contractor — we operate as a true design-build company. That means our clients work with one integrated team from concept to completion. My wife, Amanda, leads the design side of the business, and I oversee construction and operations. Together, we bridge the gap between creativity and execution. Our clients don’t have to coordinate between separate designers, architects, and contractors — we manage the entire process under one roof.

We’re known for being professional, structured, and transparent. Construction can be overwhelming for homeowners, and one of our biggest priorities is creating a clear, stress-free experience. We invest heavily in pre-construction planning, detailed scopes of work, fixed-cost proposals, and strong communication. That preparation upfront is what protects timelines, budgets, and expectations.

We also take pride in our trade partnerships. We work hard to build long-term relationships with quality craftsmen who share our standards. That consistency shows in the finished product.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that our company represents integrity and accountability. We don’t chase volume at the expense of quality. We focus on doing projects the right way — structurally sound, code-compliant, and designed to last. We combine craftsmanship with systems, creativity with process, and design with disciplined execution.

At the end of the day, we’re a family-led business building spaces for other families. We understand that we’re not just remodeling houses — we’re improving the way people live in their homes.

That’s what sets us apart.

What matters most to you?
Integrity matters because in construction, your word is everything. Clients are trusting us with their homes, their money, and their vision. Doing what we say we’re going to do — even when it’s hard — is non-negotiable. That standard was instilled in me by my dad when he taught me the trade at a young age, and it’s something I carry into every project.

Family matters because this business isn’t just about building houses — it’s about building a life. I have the privilege of working alongside my wife, Amanda, and that means what we’re creating through Speciale Design & Build is bigger than projects. It’s legacy. It’s something our children can look at and be proud of.

And building something that lasts matters because I don’t believe in shortcuts — whether that’s in construction or in business. We focus on structural integrity, thoughtful design, and systems that allow us to grow the right way. Success to me isn’t just revenue — it’s sustainability, financial freedom, and creating opportunities for the people around us.

At the end of the day, I want to be known as someone who built well — in business, in family, and in character.
