Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanaz Gardiner.
Shanaz, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from the Turks and Caicos Islands, and I think growing up there has influenced so much of who I am and how I see the world. I’ve always been creative, very visual and naturally drawn to storytelling. Growing up in the Caribbean, storytelling is woven into everyday life. It shows up in the way families pass down memories, in our humor, in the way we talk to one another and in the stories we tell about where we come from.
Some of my favourite stories growing up were the ones told by family. They could have me on the verge of tears one moment and bursting out laughing the next. I think that was one of the first ways I understood just how powerful storytelling could be. As I got older, I became more curious about why certain stories stay with us and how they shape the way we see people, culture, places and eventually even brands. Long before I had the language to call any of that marketing or communications, I was already drawn to the ideas at the heart of both.
Through my professional work experience, including my time with Fortis, I realised how much I enjoyed creating campaigns that could actually connect with people. My journey into content creation happened almost immediately after that realisation. I started by simply sharing vlogs and documenting parts of my life, and eventually that evolved into sharing the things I genuinely enjoyed or felt I was really good at.
Over time, I began to realise there was actually something bigger there. I started learning what it really means to connect with an audience and give people a reason to find value in what you share. I’ve learned how to tell a story visually, how to build a personal brand and, eventually, how to create content that still feels authentic to me while working with different brands.
As my platforms grew, so did the opportunities. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with brands across beauty, lifestyle, tech and travel, and those experiences really helped me start seeing myself as more than someone who just posts online. Content creation became something I genuinely wanted to build and take seriously.
At the same time, I’ve always had an interest in marketing and communications, and that eventually influenced me to pursue both my BA and MA in areas spanning marketing, communications and PR. Continuing my education in that space has helped me better understand the strategy behind a lot of what I was already doing naturally as a creator.
I’m still very much in the process of building, experimenting and figuring out what the next version of my journey looks like, and I think that’s probably the most exciting part for me. I’ve learned that you don’t always need to have everything mapped out perfectly. Sometimes you just have to keep following what feels aligned, stay open to opportunities and allow yourself to grow into things you may not have originally imagined for yourself.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. I think one of the biggest challenges with content creation is learning how to keep going when the results don’t always match the amount of effort you’re putting in. You can spend hours creating something you’re genuinely proud of and it may not perform the way you expected, while something you made almost casually can take off. Learning not to attach my confidence or the value of my work to numbers has probably been one of the biggest lessons.
There’s also a lot that happens behind the scenes that people don’t necessarily see. Content creation is creative, but it’s also a business. You have to learn how to negotiate, understand contracts, advocate for your value, manage relationships with brands and make decisions about which opportunities actually align with you. A lot of that I had to learn through experience.
I’ve also had to navigate comparison. Social media makes it very easy to look at someone else’s journey and feel like you should be further along, especially when you’re constantly seeing people’s biggest wins. I’ve had moments where I questioned whether I was growing quickly enough or doing enough, but I’ve learned that constantly measuring my progress against someone else’s can take the enjoyment out of something I genuinely love.
Probably the biggest challenge has been learning to trust my own pace. I’m ambitious and I have a lot of things I want to accomplish, so patience doesn’t always come naturally to me. I’m learning that growth isn’t always obvious while it’s happening. Sometimes the periods where it feels like nothing is moving are actually the periods where you’re developing the skills, confidence and perspective you’ll need for whatever comes next.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work sits at the intersection of content creation, marketing and communications. As a creator, I mainly focus on lifestyle, beauty, tech and travel content, but what I really enjoy is finding ways to make that content feel useful, engaging and visually strong rather than simply posting for the sake of posting.
One of the areas I’m becoming known for, especially on TikTok, is my “Edit Like an Influencer” series. Through that, I teach people how to improve their content through editing, colour grading, visual storytelling and the small details that can make a photo or video feel more polished. I really enjoy breaking those things down in a way that feels approachable because a lot of people want their content to look better, but don’t always know where to start.
I’m also growing more within the skincare and beauty space, which has been exciting because it gives me another way to combine education, recommendations and personal experience. At the same time, I like showing the less polished side of content creation too. I share candid moments of what it actually looks like to film, set up shots, redo takes, find the right lighting and create the final piece of content people eventually see online.
I think that balance is a big part of what sets me apart. I love creating polished content, but I also like showing people the process behind it. I want my audience to feel like they’re not only consuming the finished product, but also learning something about how it all came together.
What I’m most proud of is building a space where creativity and education can exist together. Whether I’m talking about editing, beauty, skincare or the realities of being a creator, I want people to leave my content feeling inspired, informed or more confident in creating something of their own.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always very creative growing up, and I would find different outlets to express that creativity. As a kid, my sister, cousin and I would create dance routines and put on shows for our parents. In high school, I joined the debating club because it was probably the closest thing I could find to acting and having a role to play. Acting was actually my dream job as a child, and I think that’s part of the reason I feel so comfortable talking in front of a camera today.
I was also involved in pageants and was the fourth runner-up in Miss Teen Turks and Caicos. I was deeply into makeup and photography too. I’ve always been a little “extra” but what diva isn’t? Even then, I loved anything that allowed me to create, perform or transform an idea into something visual.
I was also incredibly curious about how people did things. I always say that I watch film and television a little differently from the average person because I’m paying attention to the transitions, effects, music selection, camera work and the artistry behind how everything comes together. I have a real appreciation for the work that happens both in front of and behind the camera.
Looking back, a lot of the things I was naturally drawn to growing up make sense now. The performing, photography, makeup, storytelling and curiosity about how things are created all show up in some way in the work I do today.
