Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kya P.
Hi Kya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was fully aware of exactly who I was, what I wanted to be, and how gifted I was from a very early age. I felt othered very early on so it was very easy to attach myself to my creativity because no matter what I always belonged in the world that I was creating. I knew that just because I was misunderstood doesn’t mean what I was doing was wrong even when those I considered close to me would ridicule me behind my back or judge me.
I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I’m an artist, so I’m sensitive about my shit. A vulnerability I rarely rest in solely because creating and art is an inherent part of me. Other people’s perception is not. I make art for my younger self, who did not see anyone really who looked like myself trying different styles and expressing themselves in ways that weren’t traditional. I noticed that a lot of my inspirations in life faced strong adversity but were heavily vindicated and adored in their own right.
I always believed in that because everything happens for a reason. I don’t necessarily think going through adversity automatically translates to being great but I do believe that I used all that negative energy to propel me forward, I’m very good at transmuting the negative into positive because I’ve always had to. Luckily, with as much negativity or hate as I would get from those around me, especially online, I also found a lot of love and a community of support that I’m very thankful for.
To me, art is about being the answer, creating a tangible piece of yourself, and allowing others to question it, interpret it, and perceive it. I started mostly just wearing outfits for school every day. I’d do my hair, beat my mug, and serve a look. Snapchat was popular, and I would always post there right alongside Instagram and Twitter, which was where I posted my pictures and was able to reach beyond just my school. I would receive a lot of hate mostly on twitter but I didn’t really anticipate receiving as much love as I received I just enjoyed creating and making things be expressive I was always drawn to very feminine and glamourous things because of the powerful women around me.
I’ve always seen the women around me persevere through anything and make the most out of any situation. The greatest reason why I’m where I am today is that I have the mindset I have to continue to chase my dreams through any adversity or changes in my life. Although having validation is great for me I rarely thought I would be alive and I didn’t cling to any traditional careers I just knew that creating took resources which were limited around me but the only things that satisfied me was having the time to do my art.
Right now, on my journey, I feel good about where I’m going and the genuine connections I have made so far. I’m constantly evolving and trying to reach my goals and my highest self. I’m excited to share more of myself with the universe, and the universe shares with me. Be adequately compensated for my work and have the peace of mind to create and depend on the arts to support me. The same constant is that I believe in myself above everything, I know what I’m working towards being and enjoying the process along the way. I’m so incredibly grateful to my family, those close to me and those who appreciate me and see me for the artist I am.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not smooth even to this day I still face adversity with not being compensated by brands being unfairly suppressed or have my looks recreated or stolen without credit. It can feel like it won’t ever get easier, but without challenges, you may not even know or unlock your true feelings. Not only am I a darker person growing up in the south, I faced intense judgement for stepping out of the box and just dancing to a symphony of my own music, but it can be really difficult when people cannot hear your song.
It was really difficult to make close connections because eventually, I would often be betrayed by those I thought could be called my friends, but I realized how irrelevant the opinions of those who don’t support you are because no matter what they will find fault in the things you do especially children in a short time with nothing going on with their own life creatively. I never went hungry or homeless, so I am extremely privileged in that way, but there weren’t a lot of resources to put into my look, so I took a lot of time to thrift and find affordable ways to express myself when you have true style and sense of self you can make inexpensive things look opulent. It has to be in you and not on you; not everyone will resonate with that. I was able to use my platform to showcase my looks and brands, and I started to recognize that. Reach out to me to showcase my creativity and love for fashion.
Being grateful for all the brands I have been able to work with so far can feel very difficult at times because oftentimes they do not see worth in paying you it you feel like pulling teeth just to get what you’re worth with some not willing to pay at all. It doesn’t help that apps these days are so hard to navigate. As an artist, they want you to spend more time figuring out algorithms instead of just showcasing your work to the following you’ve built. Ultimately, I’m bigger than any obstacles I will ever face, and my light will shine despite everything.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I’m most known for my overall love for fashion and serving a look, but I am a multi-talented artist. I have an overall love for art, so all forms of art are called to me. I’ve been singing and dancing since I was a kid, my first-time recording was in 2019 I made a few unreleased songs, but I had a complicated relationship with the music industry, so I transitioned into modeling and painting because I really wanted to evolve my style and find other outlets of expression.
I always do my own makeup, hair and styling. I like to have that sense of control over my art. Because of my knowledge of hair and beauty and sewing I’m able to provide services like wig customization and creating my own clothing designs. My next venture is the burlesque scene as I love performing and respect the art form immensely.
I’m always in competition with myself to see how I can top my last look or my last performance or my next piece. I honestly put a lot of pressure on myself, but diamonds are made under intense pressure. I’m most proud of myself for even still holding my head high and continuing the path that’s for me.
So maybe we will end up discussing what matters most to you and why.
What’s most important to me is finding inner peace and discovering a sense of self to where I can fully create at my highest level, achieve my greatest goals, and truly showcase my talents in a way that is meaningful and inspirational for those to fully express themselves. Finding a true tribe of supporters and creatives that truly support me.
