Rising Stars: Meet LaThea Adams of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaThea Adams.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Sometimes what feels like an interruption is actually preparation for purpose.

At 17 years old, I woke up one morning completely paralyzed. It was the third day of my senior year of high school. I had just been hired as a cashier at our local Farm Fresh in Hampton, Virginia, and I had so many plans for my future.

Suddenly, everything changed.

But God had a plan that I couldn’t see.

I graduated high school on time and attended Hampton University for three years. Determined to regain my physical abilities, I eventually stepped away from college and devoted years to intensive therapy including; equine, physical, occupational, and aquatic therapy. That journey eventually brought me to Georgia in search of specialized treatment.

Along the way, I discovered wheelchair modeling, earned my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Savannah State University in 2023, and experienced countless moments that shaped who I am becoming.

Today, 21 years after I received the position as cashier at Farm Fresh, God has opened another door.

I am incredibly excited and humbled to announce that I have joined Healing the Pieces – Special Needs Homecare Agency LLC as the Care Coordinator, an opportunity presented to me by my former caregiver, LaShaya Collier.

This moment means so much to me because, I’m not simply starting a job but, I’m stepping into a role where my education, lived experiences, and years of navigating care can become a source of support for others.

I have spent years being on the receiving end of care.

Now, I have the opportunity to help coordinate care, advocate for others, and make a difference in someone else’s journey.

Looking back, I can see that God was preparing me through every chapter even the ones I didn’t understand.

The Bible says, “A man plans his way, but the Lord orders his steps.”

God has a purpose in everything that we go through.

And 21 years later, I’m beginning to understand just how beautifully He has been writing my story.

My journey has been challenging, but it has also been purposeful.

And the best part?

My story is far from over!!!

I’m excited for this new chapter. I’m grateful for the opportunity. And most of all, I’m grateful to God for reminding me that He can take what looks like a setback and turn it into a testimony.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would not be honest if I said this journey has been easy. It hasn’t.

Living without functional use of my arms and hands for the past 21 years has meant learning to do life differently. For many years, I have had to rely on my family and caregivers to be my hands and arms while helping me with things many people can do without giving them a second thought.

I can walk with assistance but I use a wheelchair for longer distances. I also use a mouth stylus for all technical tasks, such as operating electronics.

On top of this there were the battles that no one could see.

From 2012 to 2014, I battled depression. There were moments when the weight of everything I had experienced felt overwhelming. It wasn’t always easy to remain hopeful when my physical limitations reminded me daily of how different my life has TEMPORARILY become.

By the grace of God, he continues to give me strength to persevere and faith to remain hopeful in all that he has in store for my future.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Care Coordinator with Healing the Pieces Special Needs Home Healthcare Agency LLC. I coordinate clients, caregivers, and families while supporting caregiver development, quality assurance, scheduling, onboarding, and day-to-day service delivery. My role involves helping connect clients, caregivers, and families, while making sure communication, needs, and services are aligned.

What I specialize in is compassionate, client-centered care coordination. I understand that quality care is about much more than completing tasks, it’s about listening, building trust, respecting each person’s independence, and making families feel supported.

What makes my perspective unique is that I have personally experienced life as a person who depends on caregivers. I have lived through the challenges of navigating daily life with limited functional use of my arms and hands, relying on family members and caregivers to assist me. I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of care, and now I have the opportunity to use those experiences to help improve the care experience for others.

What sets me apart is the combination of education, lived experience, compassion, and resilience that I bring to my work. I don’t just understand care from a professional perspective; I understand how deeply it can affect a person’s quality of life because I’ve lived it.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the home healthcare industry becoming more personalized, technology-driven, and focused on coordinated, compassionate quality care. I believe there will be an increased need for skilled caregivers and care coordinators who can effectively support clients, families, and care teams. I’m excited to be part of an industry that is evolving while continuing to put people and their quality of life at the center.
