We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shauntel . Check out our conversation below.
Shauntel , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I start the day by thanking God for another 24! Ensuring my kid is good and has what she needs to get her day going, ensuring the dogs are situated.. make sure home is in order etc…
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Shauntel, and I’m the proud owner and founder of Dirty Birds Chicken, a Pittsburgh-based food brand known for bringing bold flavor, community, and soul to every meal. What started as a small idea to serve quality chicken with a twist has grown into a local favorite that brings people together through good food and good vibes.
At Dirty Birds, we take pride in offering flavorful, made-with-love dishes — from our signature wings and homemade sauces to creative game-day favorites — all served with a personal touch that feels like family. What makes us special is that we’re not just serving food; we’re serving an experience built on community, authenticity, and hustle.
Outside of the kitchen, I’m passionate about giving back. I started a nonprofit called Sumthin’ for the People, where we focus on feeding the community, supporting local events, and uplifting others. I also partner with organizations like Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. for community baby showers and youth programs.
Right now, I’m working on expanding Dirty Birds Chicken into a full brick-and-mortar location while continuing to cater major events and partner with other local businesses. My goal is to keep growing while inspiring others to believe that with faith, passion, and hard work, you can build something special right from your own community.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Losing my mom. That changed my whole perspective on life, people, myself etc. I don’t really care to speak more on it. It’s really something I don’t feel like words capture. You just kind of have to experience it yourself to get it.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I lost my mom. At that time I was numb, felt like I’d lost my purpose. The world was still spinning but I was stuck trying to adapt to my new reality. Trying to understand what was going on. I felt like I didn’t have the energy for anything else but myself. However, after I wiped my tears and sulked for 7-10 business days lol. I had to reality check myself and realign with my purpose. That’s not what she would have wanted from me. And I didn’t come this far, just to come this far! It’s been hard. I’ve done it broke, I’ve done it alone, I’ve done it tired, sick, stressed out, going through hell but one thing I didn’t do was quit or give up. So why would I now? So like always, I picked myself up and kept pushing! What other choice is there?
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My integrity, my child, my money and my brand. Aside from that I really don’t care about too much else. I lost a lot of things/people that were extremely important to me. So I really don’t have the same sense of care I once did. Or maybe it’s a defense mechanism to not care about much so when things change or you lose those things you don’t have to deal with the trauma of mourning the loss. Who knows, but yup! I think that sums it up lol!
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely! You don’t do it for the praise! You do it for the purpose! I’m doing it for legacy for my family/lineage. Their praise is all that matters! And even that won’t come until later, I may not even be here! I put people in position anonymously all the time and don’t look for recognition etc. that’s honestly the problem with a lot of folks now! You’re doing it for praise or public acknowledgment or acceptance thinking that’s what makes you! Not realizing that desperate need for praise speaks a lot about you and your character! You’re focused on the wrong thing! It’s about the passion and purpose you put in and out! You do what resonates with you! It’s about being selfless, that’s how you continue to stay blessed to be a blessing to others!
