Story & Lesson Highlights with Deidre Gaskin

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Deidre Gaskin. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Deidre , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
First I have to pray and read the word. I have a devotional by Joyce Meyers and it really helps me starts my day. Once I’m done with that I’m getting me and my 1 year old dressed and ready for the day. With a toddler that can take 90 days depending on their attitude LOL.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Deidre Gaskin. Most know me as a former collegiate athlete, some know me as a pretty dope publicist and now I’m a wife and new mom! My brands are The MVP, Most Valuable Publicist ® along with my PR and Marketing Firm, MayLee Media and right now I’m in the process of rebuilding and rebranding so I am currently looking to serve professionals in the sports, business and beauty sectors! Get in touch!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I’m from a small town, a country girl at heart. I flew on a plane for the first time when I was 18 years old on my way to start my college career. From there, I was able to see and experience different parts of the country, the nation as a whole. I felt that life was bigger or is bigger than just my hometown. With my background and how my family is, traveling and exploring is very foreign unless it’s for a funeral and even in that, it’s bare minimal. However, I chose to go to college far away so I can experience life besides little old Eastman, GA and little old Pass Christian, MS.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
OF COURSEEE!!! Haha. When I got to college I was on a track scholarship for high jump. I was back to back Region Champ in high school and placed in the state. However, when I go to college, I sucked!!! I felt like a big disappointment and a liar and cheat in a sense because the very thing that I came here for, I can’t execute, but I thank God for my coach. He did not give up on me even when I gave up on myself. From that point on I went from being just a high jumper to a pentathalete which placed me in the top 15 in the country! Never thought I could do it, but Coach Tom Bond is truly the best coach I’ve had and he saw in me what I didn’t see in myself and produced my potential!

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Why wouldn’t it be?! LOL I’m not the type to fake it til I make it. I’m very what you see is what you get. I’m a little too forward and bold at times and I don’t shy away from that and that can turn some people off especially if you’re weak but it’s who I am. However, like everyone else, I have my flaws and have certain areas I can work on and I have my views on things but they’re not going to change whether I’m on or offline and I really believe people appreciate that; especially in today’s time where it seems like nothing or anyone comes from a genuine place. The public version of me is a strong woman in every sense of the words strong and woman. I am the same person you see on social media. I don’t hide behind a keyboard or a page. I’m the same person you see at a restaurant, at the mall, at the gun range, at church, etc. I’m me. I’m outgoing and funny and the ones that really know me would say the same thing. Deidre is a dope, direct, determined individual that loves hard and prays harder so again, what you see if what you get. It’s a saying “I ain’t for everybody” and I’m not and honestly I’m okay with that because I feel like if you don’t like me, you really don’t like yourself because again I love hard and if you rock with me, I rock with you..no questions. Plus I’m cooler than the other side of the pillow HAHAHA.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
Trying. There’s a lot of things I want to do and if I don’t a least try then I’ll be stuck in the shoulda, coulda, woulda and that can be a miserable feeling.
