Story & Lesson Highlights with Mus Abubaker of Wayland

Mus Abubaker shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Mus, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My answer to this question never changes. It’s always been the blessing to engage with my creative self. Whether that’s through literature or music, immersing myself in the arts has not only delivered inner joy, it’s done so on a massive scale that’s not unlike a metaphoric seismic earthquake – a soulquake, if you will – rattling my soul and giving it a good shake for the sheer potent betterment of my emotional being.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Mus. I write novels. I record rap songs. I’ll be getting back into blogging soon over at www.buckheadowl.com, a not-quite-the-news page for Buckhead, Atlanta, Georgia (BAG) written, edited, and published solely by me.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
The exact same person I am now. The world told me to be a lame, privileged kid who grew up rich in the shadow of his physician parents who would never relate. I was a writer, and I am still a writer.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The deaths of my two younger siblings, Rija and Saad. Marijuana first. Then crying tears, hot yoga, spa playlists, and meditation. Not in that order.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My dad.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Sadly no. I’m a Leo. I demand praise…if I don’t get it, I’m no fun.
