Tyler Cole shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Tyler, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
That would be my dog Harvey. He’s a golden retriever and about a year and a half old. I’ve had him a year. Very smart, very affectionate. I grew up with golden’s and hadn’t had a dog in over twnety years, so having him has truly given me some joy in my days.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been a passionate filmmaker all of my life. Which was truly difficult in a small town growing up because I was pretty well the only one. I tried getting short movies done, but wrangling my classmates and friends to commit was very troublesome. Ironically, it can still be difficult to get crews together this day and age, so perhaps that was just meant to prepare me. Over these years I have learned most aspects of filmmaking, not just acting and directing, but all crew spots. I have a special affinity for cinematography and have been working with anamorphic lenses the last few years to my ever loving delight.
Currently I’m in the post production process on four features I have shot over the last two years, each a different genre. They are quite challenging because of the new media I’m working with but incredibly satisfying to cut together. As well, I’m setting up to film a few more in the coming year, so that should be a lot of fun!
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I took over directing a play in High School, one that everyone said would simply fail, or get cancelled. It had seemed that the faculty who sponsored it as well the students involved didn’t seem to care much for it. I recall a particular day where the teachers warned me that this would be shut down if the students didn’t start taking it seriously. That was when I gave an impassioned speech to them, and simply asked if it was somethign they wanted to complete. The students rallied, to my surprise, and got it together. that opening night was quite a success and one of the teachers even told me I was right. It felt nice to take a big risk and push for something that worked out so well.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Constantly. Every few years I feel beaten down by the frustrations of this craft and the industry. I see no light at the end of a dark tunnel and understand why so many give up. I can’t tell you specifically why I keep trying, maybe I’m just the Don Quixote fool after all, but film is a thing I believe in, and if you believe in something, you shouldn’t give up on it.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
100%. I don’t try to be anyone else outside of when I’m playing a character in something. I was raised to be as genuine a person as I could, and honesty has always been a good policy to live by.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Usually when I’m on a road trip. I like to let my mind wander in those times, letting go of all the stresses. It really gives perspective to leave everything behind and think on life in a broader spectrum.
