Josh Angus is Building More Than a Media Brand, He’s Building a Home for Local Rock

Josh Angus launched Groovy Dave Productions to combine his passion for filmmaking with his love of live music, but the project quickly grew into something much bigger. Through concert promotion, podcast conversations, and video storytelling, he’s working to elevate independent artists while helping strengthen the Atlanta and Athens rock community. We caught up with Josh to talk about creating spaces where musicians can be themselves, the enduring spirit of DIY shows, and the legacy he hopes to build for the local music scene.

Josh, earlier this year you launched Groovy Dave Productions, and what began with filming live performances and music videos has quickly grown into a multimedia platform featuring a podcast, live event promotion, and coverage of the local rock scene. What inspired you to take that leap, and how has your vision evolved since those early days?
In terms of what led me to taking that leap, working in music has always been a dream of mine! I’d been working in the video marketing space for years, and when my best friend joined a band the right doors just started to open for me! I started out just doing live video and some long-form projects and then in September of last year I had the immense pleasure of helping run a local music festival called “CRC Fest”! After that, it became more and more apparent that I had an opportunity to build something of my own to further serve the local rock scene.

Your podcast gives musicians a chance to talk about more than just their music, allowing fans to see the people behind the performances. Why was it important to create conversations that highlight artists’ personalities and real-life experiences alongside their creative work?
With my podcast, I want it to be a space where people feel comfortable being themselves and are celebrated for their individuality. I feel that anyone can go to one of their shows and clearly see how immensely talented they are. I want people to see the sides of them you don’t get to see on stage, because those sides are just as fascinating and special!

You’ve also found success as a concert promoter, with your first show selling out and more events already planned throughout the year. What have you learned about bringing together bands, fans, and venues, and what makes organizing live events so rewarding for you?
When it comes to the live shows, music is a universal language and I am constantly blown away by how unifying shows are, whether my own or someone else’s. I would say that it’s also the most rewarding part for me! I cherish the fact that I get to foster an environment where people are free to be themselves, leave whatever they got going on at the door, and live in the moment!

You’ve spoken passionately about the value of DIY music spaces and creating opportunities for original artists in the Gwinnett and Metro Atlanta area. Why do you believe the DIY scene is so important, and how does it help strengthen local music communities?
I love going to and supporting the local venues in Athens and Atlanta. However, to me DIY shows are music at its purest form, and you can’t duplicate the energy and passion they breed. I feel this is so important because many venues in the Metro Atlanta area have either closed or no longer book original music. The number of talented artists from this area is boundless. I take great pride in creating opportunities for them to play closer to home and helping build up the local music community!

Looking ahead, with more shows and the continued growth of Groovy Dave Productions, what is your long-term vision for the platform, and what impact do you hope it has on independent artists and the local rock scene?
Looking forward, I want to continue building the Groovy Dave brand to a place where it’s recognized nationally. I want to help the Atlanta/Athens local rock scene gain national recognition as having one of the best music scenes, if not the best. Like I’ve mentioned before, the talent here is vast and it deserves as many eyeballs on it as possible. If I can look back at the things that I’ve done and it’s helped the music here get to that point, I would consider myself a success.
